Jade Edwards is taking her first college classes. It's really special because she's also an empath. She has a difficult time in groups because they project their feelings on to her. Jade makes friends right away. She's excited to see what the future will hold for her. If only she can figure out who will be in her future.
Warm and heartfelt, this book will make you look at others in a new way. The writing is spectacular and the characters well defined and unique. I love that Jade takes things slow while getting to know herself. The way the characters grow and learn to trust each other is something that makes this book even more fantastic. You need to get this series for your library and tell others to get their copies. I can't wait to read more of Becca J. Campbell's work.
I found no issues.
I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it touched my heart. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

About the Author
An avid lover of stories that tiptoe the line between fantasy and reality (even when they plunge off one side or the other), Becca J. Campbell looks for new angles on bridging the gap between the two. She holds a special place in her heart for any story that involves superpowers or time travel. Her passion is defying the limits of her own creativity. Becca's journey into writing began as many of her other creative endeavors do - by daring herself to try something new. The question "what if I wrote a novel?" and some hastily scribbled notes on a church handout were the inspirations that jump-started her first book. Since then, she has written half a dozen additional novels and several shorter works.

Disclaimer: I was a beta/ARC reader for this book and have been asked to provide an honest review by the author.
The cast of characters is amazing. Pure and simple. Every character has a clear personality and I could see myself really getting to know them.
The story is exciting and perfectly paced. I love the POV switches. It really keeps the story going, and it's nice to see what is going on with the other characters.
The antagonist is mysterious, creepy and one of those horror movie types that you love to hate.
The writing flows nicely. I love everything I've read from Becca J. Campbell, and this is no different. She always delivers and I can't wait to read more of this new series!

Empath by Becca J. Campbell
This story is about Jade who was born with a special gift or curse as she sees it.
Jade is an empath; she feels everyone's emotions to such an extent that she is lost to her own.
Jade's parents, thinking they were doing what was right for their child, had kept her mostly isolated and she is unprepared for the barrage of emotions from others that is the reality of living on her own, going to college, and working.
There are others with 'special' gifts, and as Jade slowly comes to know them she appreciates the knowledge that she is not alone.
Jade senses that there is an evil predator but what she doesn't know is that he has her in his sights.
Great characters and storyline. 4 stars!!!!

There's an immediate sympathy for Jade. Getting bombarded by the people around you as an empath is difficult; having your emotions *replaced* by the emotions of others would be devastating. I was glad to see her growth as the book progressed.
Cam seems adorable at first but you start to feel the same sort of exasperation for him that you feel for a manipulative but cute 5 year old. His talent does come in handy though and he proves himself to be the kind of guy you want to have around.
Ethan is outright creepy. It did take me a little while to understand the thing with his eyes but I found it fascinating. Can't imagine trying to live with it though.
Logan is breathtaking. Finding out what he really is is something I'm looking forward to.
The book is well written. It has a good pace, captures your interest in the first chapter. I don't recall a single stilted moment. The only real issue I had with it is the jumping around between characters; it was a trifle confusing in a couple of places.
Overall, the book has the same kind of feel as some of Chloe Neill's books, though Ms. Campbell certainly has her own voice. I enjoyed it so much I've finished it in less than 24 hours. And I am looking forward to the second Flawed book, Outsider.

Rules of engagement: I am providing an honest review as I was given a copy of this novel
I just finished reading Empath and I must say I really enjoyed reading this book. The story is a refreshing one and at times, made me think this could be done as a movie each character have super power.

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, I promise!!!*
Empath by Becca J. Campbell was quite a surprise to me. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Although I think the plot and the characters could have been developed a bit better I think It was really good. The main character Jade has an ability to feel the emotions of the people around her, and she can't seperate her feelings from other peoples feelings, so you could see how this would be hard for her. She's been isolated practically her whole life except for a few friends, so when she goes to college it's a huge change for her.
I liked Jade for the most part but she kind of bothered me when it came to Cam and leading him on. Cam is definitely my favourite character from the book because he was really cute and caring. I also liked his siblings Chloe and Josh and I liked how they included Jade and made her feel welcome. Ethan, on the other hand was just creepy but the chapters in his perspective were really interesting to read. I totally was not expecting what he had in store for Jade. I really enjoyed that element in the story.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by this book and I totally recommend it to paranormal lovers!

AN EMPATH GOES UP AGAINST A PSYCHOPATH
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2016Verified Purchase
While the total antithesis of the kind of careless, heartless individual we all love to hate, being an empath for Jade is actually a curse; a curse from which her parents did everything they could to prevent her from suffering. Empaths are those individuals who are strong receivers of the emotions and feelings everyone around them has, which can definitely become overwhelming. Image if you will the kind of feelings and emotions you get when someone dear to you has died. Now multiple that by a hundred; no make it by a thousand and you’ll begin to realize why she considers it to be actually a curse.
Luckily for Jade her parents made sure to keep her as isolated as possible growing up as a child; but at the same time they unfortunately they didn’t do anything in preparing her for the time she might leave the nest to go to college. There, she now needs to learn how to set up some sort of protective barrier from the emotions and feeling those around have. Instead of merely feeling other people’s emotions these emotions are ruling her as she becomes their emotions.
Once Jade started going to class the multitude of emotions from her classmates: nervousness, excitement, rage, fear and frustration made her relatively helpless since she hadn’t developed any sort of barrier to shield herself. Luckily she was able to gather some classmates to help her gather the knowledge she needed to begin to protect herself.
All is comparatively fine, fine that is until a psychopath, named Ethan, develops a fascination for Jade and the feeling of fear she’s constantly emitting because of the lack of control over that emotion. You wind up with a showdown, either Ethan will possess Jade or Jade must use the empathic curse she was born with to overcome him.
This book is full of emotions and is a captivating, fast paced read due to the practically flawless writing of the author for which I given the author 5 STARS.

A Captivating and Poignant Paranormal Novel
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2017Verified Purchase
All writing comments aside, I first want to applaud this writer’s humanity and her coming up with the brilliant premise of the Flawed series. To take individuals who are different from the rest and show their weaknesses and strengths is a noble, magnanimous approach to writing.
{i}Empath{/i} is a good book. It is well-written and the storytelling keeps the reader reading. Its characters are multi-faceted and are drawn according to the advice of most creative-writing teachers.
This good book could be an even better book, however, if the characterization could be deepened a bit more. I felt there were too many flawed characters in one place, which took the full attention away from the main character, Jade. The way I see it, four strangely flawed people competed for the reader’s attention, even if they supplemented one another in some scenes.
I thought if Jade would be the only one or at least one against a formidable enemy would be enough or even, Jade against Nathan would be good, too. Also, from my point of view, showing scenes maybe in flashback from Jade’s backstory —not just telling them--would add to her characterization. Still, Jade is a well-written character as all the others are.
The pacing of the novel is smooth, getting a bit faster toward the end, which is a good strategy in raising the suspense level. Also, the plot moves in a way that some tension is there in just about every scene. Then, the word choices, use of the language, and all other aspects come together to make this book a delightful paranormal, young-adult adventure. Even as an old person, I enjoyed reading it very much.

Hooked from the opening pages
Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2016Verified Purchase
Empath by Becca Campbell hooked me from the opening pages. I was quickly drawn into Jade’s world and the characters became my friends too…most of them.
Jade walked into the classroom and it confirmed her reason for online classes. The feelings bombarded her…anger, attraction, excitement. She struggled to maintain a calm appearance. Were they her feelings, or someone else’s?
‘She believed in God…Why had he given her this FLAW?’
Everything changed for her when she met Logan. He calmed her.
Logan, is a professor at the college she was attending and he is a loner, for reasons of his own. He knew he should stay away from her, but we know how that goes. Becca Campbell’s writing drew me to him immediately. There is something special about him and I was as drawn to him as Jade was. She wondered…is he special too, is this the beginning of something wonderful for her, could she have a relationship?
Ethan…Becca draws a vivid picture of him in my mind. I do love a good villain and Ethan fits that picture perfectly. He is a psychopath, feels no fear and has powers of his own. He collects snakes and they are his tools of torture. Serial killers collect trophies and his are especially heinous. His thoughts and fantasies are EVIL, and they are about Jade. He MUST have her.
Cam, poor Cam. He has a huge crush on Jade and I wonder what will become of him. Since a snowboarding accident, he has blackouts that cause a sense of deja vu. I love that Becca describes his senses in depth…every sight, sound and smell, no matter how small.
Jade has more friends with unique powers of their own and they all hold a special place in her world. Why were they chosen? Maybe they weren’t FLAWS. Maybe they were gifts.
When Jade meets ‘Bigfoot’ I was not surprised. I expected it and had hoped it would happen. I think I know his name. Will I be right? We will have to wait and see.
I like how the romance is slow developing, subtle. Do you remember your first love…the butterflies in your stomach, the heat of a blush rising to the surface of your face, the excitement of even a glimpse of him/her, the teasing and playfulness of a conversation? It reads like real life and that makes the story even more believable. The triangle is not really a triangle, but Cam feels like it is.
I guess you can tell I fell in love with the characters. They may be young, but the danger surrounds them as they go about the normal business of life. I usually write more about the action in a novel and the characters just happen to be in the way. Not so with Empath. I am now heavily involved in their lives and will see it through to the end.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Empath by Becca Cambell.

This book is honestly kind of crappy. A bunch of people have super abilities
Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2018Verified Purchase
This book is honestly kind of crappy. A bunch of people have super abilities, but they think of them as flaws. There's a love triangle that really isn't, because it exists solely as a result of one person's powers. Most of the book is emotional drama over the love triangle, interrupted by chapters written from the perspective of a serial killer. At the very end, one of the main characters gets kidnapped by this killer, and all the others characters have to put aside their differences to find her and stop him. And it just so happens that this requires exactly the abilities they each have. I was underwhelmed.
