3 stars is my objective rating based on the idea that children might like this mess. 1 star is my personal feeling.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I decided to watch Enchanted but it certainly wasn't this. I had my doubts about the shaky premise of animated fairy tale characters being magically sent to real-life New York, but it was so well reviewed that I figured there must be something to it. And I actually like fairy tales like Cinderella, Tangled, Frozen and Ella Enchanted to name a few. But I found this film to be embarrassing and the only reason I stuck it out is because I am now in the habit of writing these reviews.

Whereas many fairy tales are aimed at a wide age range which can include adults who like these stories, I felt that this one was aimed at very young children. Who knows, maybe if I had young kids who squealed with delight at some of the crazy antics here, I might see the value in this film but it is tortuously sweet, smarmy and goofy. I have this pet peeve that sometimes Disney does not flesh out their stories more and allow too many loopy ideas to make the final product. I can deal with the idea that the princess Giselle, the lead character, can telepathically communicate with animals to help her, but cockroaches? Maybe some think it's clever when loads of flies, rats and even hundreds of large cockroaches come out of the drains to help clean an apartment, but I thought it just gross and weird. I guess I never saw the cute-and-cuddly factor of cockroaches.

For me, the only redeeming factor of Enchanted is that Amy Adams as Giselle, and the less-seen James Marsden as Prince Edward, are fully committed to their truly wacky roles and attack the material with zest.

Enchanted is a brilliant movie that captures the quintessential essence of what makes Disney...Disney! Enchanted is a movie that; is nostalgic in the ways that it pays homage to traditional Disney by fitting in as many allusions as possion; it is an audacious effort to blend the old with the new; it is a revival of music from the golden era of Disney films during the late 80s/early 90s through the brilliant composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notredame, etc). The music alone should inspire you to go. What makes this movie so approachable is how it contains so many Disney qualities but also plays upon these Disney themes through new, and often humorous, interpretations.

The characters are very lovable and Amy Adams must be recognized for her brilliant performance. Sure, it's very far-fetched; yet, that's what makes her so great. Her ability to completely immerse herself into the portrayal of a fairy tale princess will have you rolling with laughter. Some have commented on how Enchanted is for Amy Adams as Sound of Music was for Julie Andrews. That's a big comparison to live up to and you may or may not agree but Adams definitely brings the movie to life.

A common misconception about this movie is that it's only for little kids. No, this movie will appeal to everyone. Although Enchanted has a fairly predictable plotline, what makes it outstanding is the way in which it is presented. It is a delightful movie which will bring out your inner-child and leave you smiling. There is a musical in the middle of the movie that will leave you wondering how it make senses, but perhaps this is what makes this movie so lovable: it doesn't have to make perfect sense in order for you to enjoy it.

The concept of Enchanted (fairytale princess banished to New York) sounds awful. One might expect super saccharine bad acting juxtaposed with just plain mean encounters. However, Amy Adams commits to the role and makes it funny without being ironic. There are also no gratuitous mean scenes. All in all the story, characters and feel of the movie are very well balanced. Kids and adults should find something to love in this film.

I love this movie and found the classic princess story references, hilarious. Enchanted looks even better on blu-ray, and I particularly like the D-files - a trivia type game that includes brief references and comparisons to the other Disney films.

My only criticism (for photography buffs) is the lighting, which is too contrasty. The attempt at natural lighting results in some shots looking too hot (washed out or white with light) on one side and / or too dark on the other - even the blu-ray cannot correct this overall error in judgment. (I wish it had been adjusted in post production - it's that distracting). I would have preferred a more balanced, warmer tone to make this film look as great as it deserves. Most audiences won't notice however, so don't let my disappointment detract you from taking in this fun film - it is very enjoyable for the whole family.

My wife and in-laws are Disney crazy and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how fun this movie was. Enchanted kept my attention and even made me laugh at times. I am not one for musicals but this was very catchy. Enchanted was one of the better Disney movie's in the past 10 years. Compares to some of the classic's like Lion King, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. Well done Disney!
