Anger vs fearful, Italian mafia royalty vs Russian mafia whore. Dante hates her, but hate turns into want...El is afraid of him, but she's drawn to him at the same time.
They attend Eagle Elite but there's a new mafia in charge there, and Dante has to do despicable things to gain their trust, gain the information to bring them down. Interwoven story lines, suspense, mystery, crime, romance, and tears. I'm always prepared for the unexpected when reading the Eagle Elite series, but Rachel Van Dyken shocked the hell out of me with this one!
Who knew that among all the violence and war, there could be such beauty and sweetness and love. It was such an intense story that the moments that I found myself smiling seemed strange, but those moments got me through the gut wrenching ones.
Even more excited for Eulogy now...the wait is going to be excruciating!
Assisting with his "training", various mob bosses that readers might be very familiar with from other books in the series test him in all sorts of ways, mostly physical, but perhaps the most challenging test for Dante involves being sent to college, the same one those other mob bosses once attended only a few novels ago, to find out what's going on in their absence.
Oh, and take the pretty girl with you. The one rescued from an abusive relationship with a prominent member of a rival Russian family. Coz' that always makes things easier.
In many ways I found Enrage to be darker and grittier than anything I've yet read from Rachel Van Dyken, including the earlier books in this series and it's related spin offs.
Dante's character is intense and wounded. Dangerous to himself and those around him, irrespective of his feelings towards them. With his self control teetering on a razor's edge he's tested with things he's not at all prepared to deal with. Trust, respect, love, all are things he'd prefer to avoid all the while being tasked with investigating both the happenings at the Mafia owned university he's attending, and mysterious goings on much closer to home.
I don't think I could possibly overstate the emotional intensity I felt in this book. Dante and El, both relatively new characters to the series, sizzle with the intensity of their feelings towards each other, both positive and negative, and the tension within the wider group they're embraced by is only heightened by the fact that some involved can't seem to sense it at all.
While it's written so that it can be read as a standalone, much more than some books in the series, this one isn't just a story focusing on the main two characters. The story line ripples through virtually all of the major players in the series to date with implications for all, such that I'd recommend reading the whole series, or at least the two preceding books to get a sense of the deep ties and relationships between the families.
The short choppy nature of the chapters, some of which were only a couple of pages long, only served to exacerbate the trepidation I felt as I got deeper and deeper into the story while keeping me guessing as to what could possibly coming next as I raced through page after page.
Literally could not put it down and read the whole thing in one sitting, which seems to be a thing for me when it comes to Rachel's books, I'm inclined to think it's one of her best yet, both in terms of using her writing style to evoke an emotional connection with the characters and the overall story line driving towards a compelling inescapable conclusion.
Six months ago Dante walked into this life. A mob life. With a family full of bosses. And also living with a girl that he shouldn't want. He was in Hell. A prison. Before he could be fully emerged into this life he needs to prove his loyalty. To do that he has fight. He has to win. He has to spill blood. Train day in and day out. This is not just physical but mental. Train to be ruthless for the times you can not hesitate or die yourself. Yes. It was hell but it was his new reality. It was in his blood.
I can't really get into the storyline. I do not want to spoil anything. So I will say that the story is addicting! Once I started, I didn't want to put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next. I now know why my blog partner, Kara is obsessed with this series. These characters. They are protective, ruthless, and f- hot! Dante is only twenty but he is not a kid. He is all man. A sinfully sexy man. And El is one of the strongest characters I have ever read. She has a painful past that wouldn't have killed many.
Overall...Wow! It's one addicting, cringeworthy, and sexy story! I know I wouldn't want to f- with any one of these characters!
“Can’t you beat the s- out of someone else?”
“Nope, you’re my new favorite.”
“Glad you see it my way.”
“This isn’t a fairy tale, and if it was, I sure as hell wouldn’t be the prince.”
“Whoa!” I caught them with one hand. “One doesn’t just toss a bag of Oreos, El, they’re delicate.”
