This paranormal unit will protect the human population from the evil Red Hand organization no matter what it takes in this thrilling paranormal romance. Agent Draven Stone was on assignment when he met his mate and he let her go, now years later he’s in for the surprise of his life when she walks back in needing protection.

This steady to fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge with lots of suspense, drama, action and passion. The author describes the story with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the well orchestrated action and suspense draws the reader deeper into the story. The characters are strong, compelling and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.

The attraction that Draven and Jes feel for each other explodes from the pages from first eye contact and the sex scenes blaze with a vibrant intensity that scorches the reader to their toes. Really, how was this clueless alpha wolf able to walk from such passion? Of course when she walks back into his life and turns it upside down the sparks fly in every direction, but they will have to put that on hold as the danger escalates around them and Jes has some traumatic issues she has to overcome. The reader really can’t help but get caught up in their story as all the drama and excitement unfold and all the other intriguing characters in this Shadow Unit just suck the reader in even more ensuring that they want to know more.

The author has created a fascinating world with some very captivating characters, surprising twists and lots of action. While there a couple of spots where it seemed a little slow, there was no way I could put this story down until I had read the very last word and I must warn you though, I was quite disappointed that Jes and Draven’s story doesn’t end and that I have to wait until I read the next book in the story.

My first thoughts on this novel? What a twist and what a rush. This was awesome. My final thoughts however, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me! It’ can’t end like that!’ (vocally enough that my dogs came running). A standalone novel this is not, but completely phenomenal none the less.

This novel is vividly visual right from the first page. I can see the characters and their surroundings right in my mind’s eye. Eden’s off the walls, in your face writing style keeps you on your toes throughout. Eden also sets off at a fast pace that she keeps up for most of the novel. There were a few places where the story lagged as she fills in her readers about necessary background information, but that is bound to happen in the first novel of a new series.

I really like Eden’s take on the supernatural world. As many different species and races as she presents, the supernaturals actually stick together for once. At the same time, each of the supernatural races is individually developed. As a reader you don’t get to know everything about any of the races, however you know as much about them as the other characters do. It’s quite the unique concept. The well-developed supernatural law enforcement agency is also very intriguing.

The characters in this novel are completely off the hook. By individually developing each of the characters Eden allows them to stand on their own. At the same time, she ties everyone together so that you can see how they fit into their unit and family as a whole. With the large variety of character types in this novel there is someone for everyone to fall in love with and to identify with. There is also someone for every reader to keep as the bad guy.

Overall, this was a brilliant introduction to the Shadow Unit.

3.0 out of 5 stars undecided Oct. 21 2013

I'm of two minds, having finished this book. On one hand, I found myself really irritated with the book in general and the cliffhanger ending in particular. On the other hand, I apparently liked it since I was willing to go out and buy the sequel. The latter probably trumps the former.

To address that first issue, what annoyed me the most was the fact that the whole thing is just so darned wordy. What I mean is that Ms. Eden often takes pages and pages to say what could have been accomplished in two sentences. And while this sometimes worked really well, painting a vivid mental picture and setting the scene for the characters to shine in (and they often do), at other times I found myself thinking, 'Oh. My. God. Have we really not moved on yet?' Unfortunately this latter thought struck me more often than I would like to admit.

This excess verbiage also means that, even though the book is 232 pages long, very little seems to happen. Even less once you factor in the fact that half the book is sex scenes. This is to be expected, of course, so mentioning it isn't a complaint. But it leaves the plot to consist of essentially a one-night stand, a meeting, a car trip, a kidnapping, a rescue, and a cliffhanger. That's not much for 200+ pages.

As I said, I did go out and purchase book two...or open up my laptop and click 'buy now.' So there were obviously things about the book I liked too. Most notably I liked Royce and Ronin, who Burned in Shadows is focused on. Their mystique was intriguing and I want to know more about them.

I liked the way Eden made Draven's over-bearing, alpha nature feel almost like more of a cultural misunderstanding between him and Jes than anything else. From a werewolf's perspective it was obvious that their situation would work out and that Jes would come around in time. She has to, she's his mate and therefore biologically unable to do otherwise. From a human perspective however, he had no right to do some of the things he did and take those choices from her, regardless of what the end result would be.

I liked seeing Draven come completely unglued over his woman and adjust to the idea of a child. I liked the banter between the members of the Shadow Unit and the mystery of their species. All-in-all I liked the general world Eden created here. I could have done with a little more world-building, so that I had a firmer grasp of it though
2.0 out of 5 stars Two stars because she left us hanging Jan. 25 2017

Too darned much internal dialogue. I was going to give this three stars but because she left us hanging, two. When I started reading this I put it aside because it was going to be one of those entitled, spoiled brat main character and it also seemed to be aimed at a younger crowd. I picked it up after a day or so and I was surprised. It got so much better that it seemed like someone else was writing. That being said there were some inconsistencies that were very obvious. One being that 5 years after Jes’ one night stand with Stone she’s got a five year old shifter child (his). Math was not my strongest subject but there’s some gestation time missing. Another is her scent. Stone describes it in the beginning as some coconut and vanilla concotion and nearing the end he describes it as honey and spice. Then we have the awful corny stuff too: he was the champagne to her strawberry. As I said, the story got better and then our author leaves us hanging. So we will have to buy another book of hers to find out what happens — or in my case, not. So many of us cry to the heavens about authors that do this but they don’t listen. The alternative is to stop buying their books.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author/publisher/blog tour company in exchange for an honest review.

This book didn't capture my attention, it grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go.
It is my first read by this author. She writes strong female characters and the males are to dream of. I don't do spoilers, so if you love a strong male who can be sensitive, a wiseass, and hot as hell, then this book has them in spades. I will tell you it is a cliffhanger though. So get the series.
