Bought this as a leisure read. It is not leisurely. If I was reading it for a philosophy or psychology course, it would be great but some content is dry and hard to get through. The overall picture make sense. When I finally finish it, I know it will have been a contribution to my knowledge.

I don't have a background in Psychology, and much of my historical knowledge about WWII is average, so this is the point of view from which I read this book. Now, having stated that, I really enjoyed this read for what it was. It was insightful, being that Fromm gave me so much to think about and attempt to relate to my own life and people that I have encountered that tend to either dominate or submit in a relationship. I certainly woudln't say that anything he writes should be taken without consideration, but perhaps that's what makes this book enjoyable is that he does bother to state opinions and perspective - this is what makes the book valuable, giving it perspective that I can take away from it. Surely, Fromm is of of the great thinkers of last century, as well.

I'd also have to say that it's quite a deep book. Don't expect a light, easy read, or even one that you can put down and be done with. It'll be a book a finished reader can contemplate, and leaf through, finding particular phrases and descriptions that relate to various universal human situations.

As we get further and further away from the horrors of mid-20th century struggles, books like this will become more and more important. Distance gives us certain perspective - and to read what such an accomplished thinker like Fromm has to say about a situation so close to his own life, to hear about he tries to make sense of it, is incredibly valuable. Somehow, I get a sense that he's even able to take a big picture perspective of the whole thing.

Read this book if you have any suspicion that you might enjoy it.

In spite of the fact that I have worked as a psychotherapist and have always disagreed with the author's premise that the fear of aloneness is the driving impulse behind most psychological issues, the conclusions that Fromm develops from this faulty premise are accurate in spite of this. Yes, mankind does seek to undermine the democratic rule by linking himself to other constrictive groupings. Yes, the authoritatian personality does enact both masocism and sadism on himself and those around him. And, yes, it is these very traits that puts all democratic countries in peril of resorting to eventual tolatarianism. The differences between Germany in the 1920s and the US of this present era are very slight. The US is seeking group comfort from extreme right wing political groupings similar to Germany of an earlier era. These groups mix lies with the truth as if they were of the same complexion. They create hatred towards other races, whether they be Mexican, Arab or even 'Liberal'. They both have built their platform on the concept of fear; fear of the Jews, Russians, Poles, etc... vs. fear of terrorists and liberalism. And lastly, they both have only one purpose in mind for the populace; continued ignorance of the masses to the real issues while dominating and controlling their economic and religious lives.

A Definite Piece of the Puzzle - A Book To Be Read

An amazing book that pieces modern society starting from the medieval to the renaissance and reformation, that is, from a well defined structured and fixed group identity, fixed meaning to life, determined purpose to life and the here after, to that of the existential, capitalistic and monopolist society that has produced radical individualism with the type of freedom producing severe loneliness, separation and the need to alleviate such emptiness, which has been fulfilled by illusionary means.
Fromm goes both into the psyche of man, the nature of societal structure, the development of western civilization and need for security and certainty to that of either authoritarian rule, internal conscious rule or the invisible rule of democratic conformity to public opinion, or automation.
Basic Masochistic/Sadistic desires of man from the extreme, to what is considered "normal" has been seen in the forfeit of the individual self into totalitarian control, capitalistic profit and religious and social concepts that attempt to fill the void of separateness without keeping the self.
Fromm ends his book in what the positive traits of what Faust would be: that of spontaneous living, not compulsive living, but in positive affirmation and movement, in the process of life, not the results, the experience of the activity of the present moment. I couldn't agree more.

Post WW II philosophy still has something to say

I believe the essence of "Escape from Freedom" can be found first in the chapter, "Mechanisms of Escape":
"The person who gives up his individual self and becomes an automaton, identical with millions of other automatons around him, need not feel alone and anxious any more. But the price he pays, however, is high; it is the loss of his self."
And second, under the chapter, "Freedom and Democracy":
"This loss of identity then makes it still more imperative to conform, it means that one can be sure of oneself only if one lives up to the expectations of others. If we do not live up to this picture, we not only risk disapproval and increased isolation, but we risk losing the identity of our personality, which means jeopardizing sanity."
"... We must replace manipulation of men by active and intelligent co-operation, and expand the principle of government of the people, by the people, for the people, from the formal political to the economic sphere."
