First off, this book is for ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR.
The "Essential Elements 2000: A Comprehensive Band Method" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them. This book comes with a play-along CD. This CD includes all solo exercises.

HASH(0xa2d90c00) out of 5 stars Good Beginner Book for Teaching Note Reading Jan. 30 2009
By David Stahly - Published on
Format: Paperback
I teach bass guitar lessons. This is a good beginner book for teaching note reading on electric bass. If your bass student wants to play electric bass in a middle school or high school jazz band, they will need to learn to read music. This beginner book does a good job getting them started on learning how to read and play notes on the bass clef. After this book, they will want to move on to a more advanced book that teaches scales, chords, music theory, improvisation, and more.

If your bass student wants to play rock, metal, grunge, country, or about anything else, they probably don't need to learn to read notes right away and should learn to read tab instead. Most of their music is written in tab form and will allow them to play their favorite music more quickly. Note reading would be a good skill for them to pick up at some point, as well as music theory, chord structure, scales, improvisation, etc.

In my experience as a bass and guitar instructor for 20 years, most kids don't have the patience to work through note reading playing the inane little ditties that fill these types of books. They want to play songs they know. Get them started playing the songs they like first, and then introduce them to note reading later.
HASH(0xa2db8c60) out of 5 stars Great Book BUT SERIOUS TYPO!!!! Dec 29 2014

I bought this book, I LOVE IT!!!! I now have learned 2 instruments from the Essential Elements books and I can positively say that I love them and this book is no exception. This series of books takes you step by step at learning your instrument and do so very effectively by teaching you one or two notes at a time then practicing the crap out of them before moving on. It is the age old but very effective practice makes perfect method.

On page 25 of the book where it teaches you the note C there is a MAJOR typo. It tells you that C is the fourth fret on the G string making that strings notes go G,Ab,A,Bb,C,B and that is VERY wrong. The G strings notes should instead go G,Ab,A,Bb,B,C. MAKE SURE YOU NOTICE THIS AND CHANGE IT because it may not be very important now but it will lead to disaster in the future. Just remember, the bass goes up chromatically (if you don't know what that is Google it :)) .

Now because there is that typo you may be asking, "Why would I want this book then". The truth is that aside from a private teacher this book is the best (in my opinion) out there to learn a new instrument so I highly recommend it. Just watch for page 25. :)
HASH(0xa294aabc) out of 5 stars Great Bass Book Sept. 19 2013

Really simple, smart curriculum for learning bass. Songs are simple, yes, but a great way to add bass knowledge whether you already play guitar or just starting out. The CD really helps for playing along, but sounds a bit cheesy. Don't let that stop you though.
