The Essential UCLA School of Economics is a short, very readable introduction to a body of research. The book focuses on the public policy implications of this research. Less attention is spent on purely theoretical issues and on business implications. Thus, the book is ideal for laymen with a cursory understanding of economics who wish to know more about the economics of public policy and for undergraduates interested in public policy. It could also provide a good starting point for graduate students interested in public policy.
The authors seem to forget, however, that there are more reasons to study economics than to determine public policy. Understanding the world for its own sake is good reason, and business implications of economics is another. Some attention to the way the world works is given, especially in the discussion of the theory of the firm and of business concentration issues, but not enough for someone particularly interested in the topics for their own sake.
For those whose interests align with the content, the book is excellent, with clear explanations in a volume without too much extraneous detail.
