The Expanse is a dark portrait of humanity's future. The series flickers between shades of grey, as none of the show's protagonists are heroes in the classical sense. The two main characters showcase a typical underachiever antihero, and a film noir throwback quite expertly. The show immediately touches upon other influencing genres such as horror and political drama.

The politics in this show are the main driving force, but do not get a lot of screen time, surprisingly. First and foremost The Expanse is a character drama, with spurts of science fantasy action. Politics steps in to explain previous mysteries, or foreshadow events to come. Overall this mixture works well, and does not linger too long on one element or another. The action is not senseless, and the politics do not slow the pace of the show. The case is a diverse mixture of races and genders, and is full of strong characters and enigmas that play off each other well.

I highly recommend The Expanse for fans of sci-fi such as Firefly or Battlestar Galactica. This series is sometimes lauded as "Game of Thrones in space" which I find to be pandering and reductionist. Firefly fans can enjoy the repartee of a close-knit crew on a ship that isn't all it appears to be, while BSG fans can enjoy politics mingled with sci-fi critiques of morality and a sprinkling of action to entertain both crowds.

Excellent sci-fi series but the blueray dvd is junk. The dvd seems to have been mastered by amateurs.

The shooting of the episodes is often a little to dark to see much. Like they were masking cheap effects. Sound quality on the dvd leaves to be desired too. Using subtitles so not to miss parts of the dialogues.

The story itself is excellent and the acting is good, The description of colonisation of the solar system seems realistic, Makes me want to buy the books.

This made me wish for a button in Amazon that would inform me when Season 2 was released as despite the fact that I have the books, the series is sufficiently different to make me eager to continue the story.

Found that this is a series that seriously benefits from the extra oomph of HD. Blu-Ray version definitely recommended!

If you're looking for some junk food sci-fi (read: quick, easy to digest, not particularly filling) then this is not the show for you. This is a story that requires you pay attention. This isn't your nearly Utopian Star Trek universe with single-serving plots that come in one episode packets. This is a show you come to watch when you want a full course gastronomical event of science fiction. Gritty, ambient, claustrophobic, and ambitious, most of the episodes deserve multiple viewings, not necessarily to understand but to fully appreciate the details. And I do mean details, watch how things are insinuated or implied by secondary characters but never spelled out, contemporary slang and lingo isn't explained but it is often repeated, when online dating pages happen to flash across the screen, pause and read, if you see a certain character's name spelled out, put it into google translate. Now you might ask yourself, "Who would watch a show this way?", when really you should be wondering, "if they put this much thought and effort into throwaway scenery..."

A note on the Blu-ray: Its perfectly serviceable, and you do get the Ultraviolet download, but there are next to no extras. Really. Just a couple of deleted scenes from the first episode.

the show is great but the blu ray is bare bones. it only has a few deleted scenes, the menu is confusing and looks cheaply made. There wasn't a lot of effort put into this release to justify it's price.

Just Perfect. This is a great hard sci-fi show. Finally something that take gravity seriously in a zero-g combat, amongst other things.
Little bit slow to start, but honestly, the only let down of this season is that it only has 10 episodes.

Fantastic show! Unique, with the slight feel (to me) of Babylon 5 and Blade Runner. Definitely recommended!

I can't really add to the other reviews. It's simply the best Sci-Fi series I've seen in a long time. Way ahead of the Canadian made (made, not shot in) crap being sold here.
