About the Author

Jeanne Guyon (1648 1717) wrote from the depth of her own spiritual

experiences. Growing up in France during the decadent times of Louis XIV,

she was devout at an early age, but was then caught up in the worldliness

around her. After an arranged marriage at age fifteen, she became increasingly

interested in spiritual things; and, for the rest of her life, she continued to seek

God diligently, teach others, and write books on Christian devotion. These

books have become Christian classics. Guyon paid a heavy price for her views

and her writings. Throughout her life, she underwent various trials, including

persecution and imprisonment for her beliefs. Her commentary on Song of

Songs was used against her and led to her imprisonment.

Without doubt the most important book I've read.
Madame Guyon has reached depths in Christ which we cannot understand without having gone there ourselves. This book will inspire all to go deeper in there walk, no matter where they find themselves.
A must read for every Christian. Truly a classic. Most important piece of literature from any century. I will reread many times.

While reading this amazingly rich guide, several times I had to stop and ponder how a woman in the 1600s could have written this without today's university education, formal Bible study, or guidance from other teachers. I think that is what God does, equips the willing, perhaps not just the educated and powerful. Jeanne Guyon obviously had help from the Holy Spirit. Her method of a deep practice of knowing God, and allowing Him space to work in your life is incredibly simple and manageable for all of us. Her first two suggestions are doable for beginners. Several later suggestions are definitely challenging, and will probably take a lifetime to work on (abandonment and continual prayer are two that will be struggles for me). If you want to learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit in your daily life, then read this book. Your life will never be the same. This will be a book I will need to read over and over to fully understand it's depth.

I read and reread this book. For those who follow Fr.Keating's books on seeking God within, this is an excellent companion. They seemed to be saying the same things! That God lives in your heart and through comtemplation He will draw you to himself. Guyon does not come out with a specific prayer methodology like Keating but she speaks the same things, prayer of silence, letting go of the false self, abandonment to God. Strange chpt 2 is kind of asterixed, I considered it extremely foundational.
This is a classic and I say get Keatings books as you get this and you have a solid intro to the Christian spiritual journey.
Ps: this is not journey of bliss and Guyon tells about the travail you will go through until you reach the inner abode where God resides and where your true self can be found...

I enjoyed this book. Madame Guyon (1648-1717) describes a "short and very easy mehod of prayer; which all can practice with the greatest facility, and arrive in a short time, by its means, at a high degree of perfection." She talks directly to the reader in a patient voice. The beginning of the book is for people who are just starting out to pray. From that part, I learned about "praying the scripture", which involves reading carefully. Finally, the book ends with what Madame Guyon calls the "ultimate stage of Christian experience. Divine Union" If you are interested in learning to pray, this is an interesting book for you.

I've read this book and am now going through it out-lining each chapter. Jeanne Guyon gets back to the basics of Christ Jesus living in us and through us to make a difference for us. She is very much like Paul in her thinking as in this book she points out again and again that the works of our flesh count for nothing. But, what does count is Christ Jesus living in us and loving through us. She is also careful to point out certain points of growth that all christians must go through, such as an initial time of feeling God's presence and dry times.

This book has had a more practical and immediate transformative effect on my walk than any other I have read. The first twenty pages alone are worth the price of purchase.
Two types of prayer are offered-- "Praying the Scriptures" and "Beholding the Lord"-- that allowed me to move from a "head" understanding of God towards a much better "heart" understanding. My quiet times have been transformed from a laundry list of my requests for God into a genuine opportunity to abide in his presence. (John 15:4-8)
