As a school and clinical child psychologist, and as a parent of a child with ADHD, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It provides a clear and humane perspective on children's behavior that is fully supported by decades of research in child psychiatry, psychology, and neurodevelopment. In addition to providing parents with an alternative to rigid, and often punitive methods for addressing challenging behavior, it provides a framework for understanding the behavior that will make it easier for parents to feel more empathetic and emotionally in control themselves. Teachers and school administrative staff would similarly benefit from reading his other book, "Lost at School," which addresses challenging behavior that arises in the school environment. Indeed, parents may also wish to read this book, as I believe it can help them to better advocate for their children at school.

This book was wonderful and gave me new glasses to see my challenging son with. As I use the tools this book have me, I expect to see many improvements. But the most valuable improvement will always be seeing my son and his challenges in a new light.

I purchased this book because its title captures my 2 year old son behavior. I understand that he is only 2 and hopefully will grow out of his explosiveness but it's nice to be aware of the strategies described in this book regardless. Actually, I believe that most information in this book can help any parent to become more confident in interacting with any type of kids. Great read and money well spend!

This book really hit the nail on the head in describing what seems to be going on with these children - how they start to go into a "meltdown" and after this begins it is as if they no longer can comprehend what is going on. You cannot at that point reason with the child and nothing you say actually gets through. The child is always sorry or evens sometimes cannot recall the events that took place while going through this event.
The book is great at helping you set priorities as to what behaviors are worth going through a blow-out and what isn't with his basket approach. In other words, how to pick your battles.
The basket approach is easy to comprehend and usually easy to put to use. However - the things that must go into the "A" basket [which are things that are non-negotiable] are, for many parents, the very same things that are causing the most disturbance in their households. This includes such things are getting up in the morning and getting dressed and going to school. He does not tell you how to best ride-out or attempt to diffuse these situations. It's great to say that parents should limit basket A to these types of items, but we still need help in getting these things accomplished!
I, myself, am the parent of an explosive/inflexible child and I'll tell you - this book was recommended by my son's school and his therapist because none of the traditional behavior management methods, medications and/or counseling has done any good in helping him and ourselves deal with this. We have been doing counseling for 4 1/2 yrs and using meds for 3 yrs. I bought the book with high hopes because he is once again in crisis at school and things are terrible at home.

A must read for parents, educators and health professionals. If you want to build a better world and make a difference, read this book. Dr. Greene's saying: "Kids do well if they can" has saved my daughter's life!

The expression "I love it" does not belong to this book. "I learned an enormous valuable amount of useful approaches to the problem(s)" comes much closer. I'm not certain I like the title, but even the author has trouble with it. But what title would be better? In any case, every teacher, or e very grade should be forced to read and be able to discuss this book well enough to be able to use it. Social workers also should have to read it, and perhaps even the police who seem to be unable to cope with people whose approaches to life are not 'traditional', and shoot them seven or eight times rather than attempt to cope with them as flesh and blood people who need to be helped by anything but a trigger-happy policeman. And if you are a parent with a child who lacks the skills to cope emotionally, even if they are smarter than any other child you know, read this book.

This book has a lot of practical suggestions for your own explosive child. I felt like the examples were applicable to my child, and the collaborative problem solving approach that was described wasn't too cumbersome to be implemented. Since reading this book, I've referred to Dr. Greene's website for the assessment of lagging skills and unsolved problems. Very helpful!

As most loving parents would, I and my ex spouse have tried everything to cope with our son's outbursts, but none of the conventional methods were working. We finally found that putting him on the Feingold program really helped but since we can't control everything he eats all the time and sometimes he has outbursts that don't seem connected to the food, we were still looking for help. After seeing a pediatrician, she said she believed our son is inflexible-explosive - not a diagnosis, but a name for the kinds of behavior we were seeing and the poor results of our efforts. She recommended this book and I must say that reading it gave me hope and comfort. Many people have insinuated that we are not disciplining our son well enough. I used to think that might be true, but after years of concerted effort to punish, discipline, reward, and otherwise "train" my son to behave, I finally realized one day that he couldn't help it. He has no control over himself in those moments. Realizing that hasn't helped much though. I have avoided family gatherings to save us the embarrassment and to save our son the heartbreak of being misunderstood by people he loves. I don't like to invite visitors to my home for the same reason. I am often in tears myself because I am so exhausted from coping with this behavior. But this book offers something no one else ever has - tools to cope with behavior that is abusive and harmful but unintentional. It has also allowed me to forgive myself for raising a son with these issues. My daughter is learning disabled in math. I now know that my son is learning disabled in dealing with frustration and change. Using the collaborative problem solving methods described in the book have helped us tremendously.Read more ›
