How to choose an optical drive?
• Consider the speed at which you wish your drive to be able to read and/or write data. Optical drive speeds are represented by the X Factor, so you might see a 52X speed CD Rom. This means it is 52 times faster than a 1X CD ROM. Audio CD ROM’s are effectively 1X – a 1X CD ROM takes approximately 60 minutes to read 60 minutes of music. In general, the greater the number, the faster the speed will be.
• There are two types of disks available worth considering: DVD and Blue-Ray. Most models today allow you to read Blue-Rays (ROM) and to read and write DVD’s (RW). There are also Blue-Ray Burners which allow you to read and write Blue-Rays, however these are more expensive.
