Product Description

Review

“Starred review. Engrossing history, vivid contemporary reporting and a cogent call to action, expertly blended in an illuminating text.” — Kirkus Reviews

“The writer does for his subject what Susan Orlean did for orchids.” — Columbus Dispatch

“... ] does for olive oil what Eric Schlosser’s did for hamburgers. Mueller traces the history of this valuable product from antiquity to the present, but the really disturbing part is his expose of the inferior quality control and outright fraud among today’s’ oil producers.” — Hollywood Reporter

Product Description

The sacred history and profane present of a substance long seen as the essence of health and civilization.

For millennia, fresh olive oil has been one of life's necessities-not just as food but also as medicine, a beauty aid, and a vital element of religious ritual. Today's researchers are continuing to confirm the remarkable, life-giving properties of true extra-virgin, and "extra-virgin Italian" has become the highest standard of quality.

But what if this symbol of purity has become deeply corrupt? Starting with an explosive article in The New Yorker, Tom Mueller has become the world's expert on olive oil and olive oil fraud-a story of globalization, deception, and crime in the food industry from ancient times to the present, and a powerful indictment of today's lax protections against fake and even toxic food products in the United States. A rich and deliciously readable narrative, Extra Virginity is also an inspiring account of the artisanal producers, chemical analysts, chefs, and food activists who are defending the extraordinary oils that truly deserve the name "extra-virgin."

I have not finished yet but find this book to be very informative. It has definitely changed how I think about olive oil and making sure I buy the best quality out there. On some foods you just can't go with what is cheapest. The way it is processed and what it's packaged in are so important. There are so many different flavors, you need to look for a new store called Olive Oil Co. There is one on the Sunshine Coast in B. C. and a few others scattered around. They have tastings and promote the same things found in this book.

I have learned much more than I ever expected about the history and economics of olive oil through this book. I wasn't aware how thoroughly it greased the operations of the Roman empire. Or its long history from classical times to today. And then there's the science, the agriculture, the social and cultural background stories.... fascinating and entertaining, all of it. And very well written.

I bought the book because I was intrigued by the fact that a lot of olive oil on the market is not the extra virgin olive oil that we think it is. I wanted to learn more and I did. This book is very informative I was actually aghast at some of the outright fraud that is committed. I learned a lot and now know what to look for when I buy E.V. olive oil. For me, the thing that detracted from the book was that it went into a little too much detail. Or it might not have seemed like too much detail if it had been written differently. It would have been better if it had been written in the style of a mystery or crime novel or spy novel. I found the style of writing without 'flair' perhaps, and very dry. I had to push myself to keep reading because I wanted to learn, but there were a lot of places where I found it very boring. I think some of them could have been left out.

This is a must read for foodies or anyone who cares about what they eat. It moves fast and you can burn through it in a weekend. Mueller peels back the covers of a business cloaked in intrigue and cheating for centuries. He makes you think twice about reaching for a bottle of extra virgin anything in your corner grocer. He makes it simple to understand how North Americans have been duped by Big Oil and how consumers are mostly on their own to avoid the cheaters and find the good stuff - extra virgin oil that tastes spectacularly good and is good for you. As opposed to -say, the majority of commercial oils that are frauds, misleadingly labelled, taste like sucking on a sock and are bad for you. If you are a one of North America's popular brand name oil brands - Mueller is one guy you really don't want to tick off.
