Ray Williams has brought together decades of research on leadership and mindfulness and summarized them in one succinct volume. There is clearly a storm brewing in the workplace and fighting it harder or being more clever in attempts to 'fix' it will only exacerbate the problems. Instead, Ray Williams presents a strong argument for mindfulness and, in particular, mindful leadership. It is fascinating how mindful leadership shows up as number of paradoxes: "to open up for change, it is necessary to sometimes stop striving to change things; to empower others, stop talking and listen from a different place; to go forward effectively, notice the present; to achieve things, stop doing and start being." p. 99. Mindful leadership brings a calm to the storm and opens itself to seeing ways through, past or around the storm which were previously unimagined.

The book is filled with tips on how to become more mindful and how to bring mindfulness into your leadership style and your organization. This is a book I will refer back to frequently.

What a great book Ray – thank you for writing it! It’s a must-read for everyone who wants to be a successful leader in the wake of this chaotic world.

“Eye of the Storm – How Mindful Leaders Can Transform Chaotic Workplaces” is a wake-up call – both for the shift taking place between old paradigm, ego-driven leaders and new paradigm, integrity and values-driven, authentic and mindful leaders; as well as the science, rigor and proven ROI of mindfulness as a way of being that will create an important distinction between leaders of the past who “want to be the best in the world” and those leading the way forward – who want to be “the best for the world”.

Incredibly well researched, as with everything Ray writes, Eye of the Storm provides a detailed overview of the crisis that some leaders and organizations are experiencing where the focus is on ego driven, externally focused goals. Ray outlines the solution –a mindful way of being (vs doing) that nurtures an inside-out approach to being intentional, and ethical in order to create a win-win situation for the leader, their family, their team, the organization and beyond.

Ray reminds us that mindfulness has gone mainstream – once thought “out there”, this scientifically proven way of being may actually save the organizational world from itself.

Ray Williams is a writer that other admire. His research is impeccable and this allows him to develop clarity in his position. While the area of mindfulness has been around for some time, Ray brings a new perspective to the table at a time when the business world needs new perspectives. I read the book with interest and when I put it down I pulled out his list of actions to incorporate mindfulness into my daily leadership activities and have those 'take 5' moments to check in with myself, find quiet spaces, simply breath, listen and reflect.....then get at it!
When most people are in overdrive with data, stimulus, and busyness the practice of mindfulness can be a place where the perspectives change, the emotions calm, and you get through the day as a different person.

Eye of the Storm breaks new ground in the already rich literature about leadership, in that it tackles new kinds of challenges in today’s entrepreneurial world that are rarely addressed by mainstream business schools and media outlets. As executive life is struggling to adapt to the necessity of becoming at once more global and more personal, and new entrepreneurial values are emerging from the internet business revolution, timeless themes of spiritual strength, empathy and beyond-transactional executive networking are resurfacing as essential concerns of the 21st century entrepreneur. Eye of the Storm is one of the pioneers in this new business literature category and is therefore an entrepreneur’s must-read.

Nobody quotes more research on leadership - or current lack of it - then Dr. Ray Williams. This book is for everyone who is a leader, thinking about being a leader, or helping others be effective leaders. The evidence is clear there is a huge leadership gap globally and Ray clearly outlines what got us here-in this leadership mess. His message is first that leaders need to stop their HUBRIS mindset (arrogance) before any change will occur. Second this book outlines the steps required to shift to being a mindful and effective leader. What I love most about Ray's writing style is that he does not sugar coat our condition or the actions required to fix it.
