When your boyfriend bets YOU in a poker game, you better know when to run…

Bad enough Jade Frost’s boyfriend drags her to an illegal gambling house. Even worse that he actually threw her into the betting pot during an intense round of poker…and lost. Talk about the perfect excuse for Jade to make him her ex-boyfriend.

Now she supposedly belongs to the ultra rich, extremely gorgeous Shep Prescott. He could have anything he wants yet he seems to be in hot pursuit of her. No matter how rude, how snarky, how impossible she acts, it doesn’t stop him. More like her horrible behavior seems to make him want her even more.

When she finds herself starting to fall for him, Jade’s confused. There’s more to Shep than the carefree rich charmer he portrays. No way could he want a serious relationship with her…or could he?

HASH(0x9fc4e75c) out of 5 stars A great start to a series I'm sure will be a hit May 12 2015
By Michelle@Book Briefs - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Fair Game is the first book in a new, new adult contemporary romance series from Monica Murphy. It's called the Rules Series and it is off to a very strong start. I thought one thing from reading the summary of the book, and thought it had potential to be interesting and funny. And it was all of those things, but in a different way than I was expecting. Shep "wins" Jade in a poker game in one of the first scenes of the book, so I thought she was going to be stuck running errands and completing tasks for him, but what actually happened was so much better. Jade is too spunky to let anyone win her, and I loved that! She took the book in a whole new direction, and it was great.

Shep comes from old money. So much old money that no one for generations has to work in his family if they don't want to. That kind of money can be a great thing, or it can really mess someone up. I think for Shep it was a little bit of both, but he seemed to at least have a healthy grasp on what his life of privilege was doing to him as a person. I couldn't get a good read on Shep at the start of the book, but as the story unfolded we saw bits and pieces of who Shep is. And I have to say that even though he initially comes across as an arrogant jerk, I love who he was with Jade. He has moments of such sweetness that I think even took him by surprise. But what was great, was that he didn't shy away from them. Yes he was shocked that Jade was making him act like someone foreign to his college persona, but he didn't try and hide or bury that side of him. He embraced it with her. And that is what made me like him.

Jade is skeptical of this Shep, just as she should be. I wouldn't have liked her nearly as much if she wasn't. She was guarded, sure, but I don't think she came across as cold or uppity. I thought she was just being cautious. I could really relate to Jade. And watching her reluctantly warm up to Shep had me grinning like an idiot. These two were just so...something...together. Cute isn't the right word, but they did work. They challenged each other constantly. It made reading about their interactions so much fun. And their chemistry is undeniable. That is for sure.

The Rules Series is going to follow Shep, his friend Gabe and his cousin Tristan. I can't wait for Gabe's story, but I have to admit that I am hesitant about Tristan's. He seems like the biggest jerk. Monica Murphy is going to have to work her magic on him. Fair Game is a great start to a very promising series. I know it is going to be a big hit with tons of readers of new adult contemporary. This was a great, sexy and fun read.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

HASH(0x9f9838b8) out of 5 stars 5 - B!tch face Jade has a solid swing. Stars! May 18 2015

5 - B!tch face Jade has a solid swing. Stars!

Fair Game is not the first book I have read from Monica Murphy, I know for sure it won’t be the last either, but it is the best book I have ever read by her.

There's something about this girl that I think... might be worth waiting for."

Sometimes when you start reading a new book, you know from the first page that you are at the beginning of something special, there’s that little tingle in your tummy, the infamous ’One More Chapter’ filters through the subconscious the whole time you are immersed in the characters and their story as it is unfolding, that was me with Shep and Jade's story, couldn’t put it down.

”Pay up. I won that hand. I won you.”

This isn’t a short book, but it didn’t feel long in its reading, I absolutely adored the initial love/hate between these two, ‘man who**' versus mouthy 'Miss Prim'. I would be lying if I said I hadn’t read a lot of similar books to the themes that featured with Jade and Shep’s story, but it all just worked perfectly for me, I got involved, I got lost in the reading and I fell in love with this couple as they fell in love with each other. The challenges they faced together, the s3xy-times, the snark and sarcasm of their conversations were just an absolute joy to read.

Being the first book in The Rules series, I am interested to see where Monica takes us next, In the Dark, Gabe’s book is due in August, and Slow Play, due November 2015, are certainly reads that I will be waiting impatiently to get my hands on.

”There’s something to be said for anticipation.”

ARC generously provided by the author, and it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

~~One of the best books I have read in 2015 so far.~~

I just recently discovered Monica Murphy and I'm so glad I came across her books because wow I loved Fair Game. The characters held my attention till the very end. Shep and Jade together led to some sexy and funny moments, they were just adorable together and what I loved was that Murphy gave us point of views from both characters which really helped especially in Sheps case because I probably wouldn't have liked him much if we only had Jade's perspective but thanks to his p.o.v I loved him.

No insta-love thank goodness, although there was an attraction between the two from the get-go, but the romance between the two was a slow burn and happened in a realistic time frame.

Was there cliche moments...yes. Did it follow your typical man-whore guy falling for a girl he never would and changing his way for her...yes BUT it was still an addictive read because Murphy knows how to write great characters with some laugh out loud moments mixed within. So if you love New Adult Romance check this one out.

There are three books in the series each one about a different couple and I can't wait to read Gabe's and Tristan's stories.

HASH(0x9f983cc0) out of 5 stars many times over and over now that I have read countless times or it at least feels like to me "SPOIL ALERT " May 18 2015

2 1/2 Stars .It's the same old story told again and again, many times over that I have read countless times ,at least it feels like that to me , sorry to say. "SPOIL ALERT ".Filthy rich and gorgeous college age commitment issued "Manwhore "meets working class gorgeous feisty college girl.He has money to burn, she works to have money to shop at "Old Navy".He wants her in his bed ,she doesn't do that kind of sex with no commitment thing. He chases her ,she keeps rejecting him.He catches her , she pretends not to love it. 60 percent into the book they both give in to their passion.Afterwards he freaks out turns into an epic jerk because he starts to have strong feelings for her and he can't handle it. They have a big fight , he wins her back at a "Fraternity party".insta love happens for them after that .She meets his parents over dinner , his mom calls her a "Gold Digger " before they even order the meal. The new in love couple walks out on his parents more in love and devoted to each other than ever and they decide to move in together. HEA ,The End. Sorry to be so cynical but seriously how many times can the same story be told.ughhh.!! Author,'s please try to be somewhat orginial, please!!! The story did have a few good funny laughs in it that I enjoyed so it wasn't all bore,I did appreciate the humor , so bottom line is if you like this sort of read then enjoy this read but if your like myself and are getting tired of this type of story than I would say skip it.

HASH(0x9f97b654) out of 5 stars ALL AROUND SUER CUTE BOOK < --- LOVED LOVED LOVED May 12 2015

6 Playing the Game Stars

This is my first Monica Murphy read and yes you can slap me in the face. I don’t know why I waited so long. If you haven’t read a Monica Murphy book, EVERY ONE NEEDS TO READ THIS ONE!!!!

Fair Game is a standalone and is the first book in The Rule series. This is Jade and Shep’s story.

Dynamics between Jade and Shep is absolutely CUTE!!!

GREAT Banter

Laugh out LOUD funny

The writing flows well with no angst and mild tension

Jade is at a poker game with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend is losing badly. Shep runs the poker place and is bored. He decides to spice up the game and offer’s Jade in the bet. If Shep wins, he gets Jade and if Shep loses then he pays $50K.

Isn’t that fantastic!!!! I loved that I got Shep’s POV because it was such a treat reading his thoughts.

So, we know what happens after the poker game. Jade thinks Shep is crazy and doesn’t want anything to do with him. I LOVED that Shep goes after Jade. I’m a HUGE fan of the Hero chasing after the Heroine.

“I want to both punch him and kiss him, though I haven’t decided yet what I’d do first. “

“I’m starting to realize I don’t mind regular girls. Everyone has flaws, including me. Lies are just that. Lies. With Jade, everything I see is what I get.”

Jade is a freshman in college and she wants to focus on her studies. Shep is rich, good-looking and loves women. Shep is very bored and is very interested in Jade. When Jade and Shep run into each other later at a frat party, oh the tension is too good!

“Oh my God, I love how he’s looking at me at this very moment. Like he wants to consume me. I feel the same. Exactly the same.”

I love the sexual tension and chemistry between Shep and Jade. Monica Murphy knows how to slowly build-up the characters and I loved it. I loved that Shep and Jade didn’t have insta-sex. The relationship between them started as annoyance and slowly builds into something more.

I love the side characters as well. Shep lives with his best friend and cousin, which I am assuming will be in the next two books. I found them 100% entertaining. Both of his roommates are players and are exactly like Shep. I liked how they gave him a hard time, but it never created too much tension that took away from the story.

Overall, I devoured this book. I gobbled it up like I couldn’t get my next fix. It was cute, adorable, funny, and all around yummy. I’m putting this book on my favorites and Monica Murphy is definitely an author I am going to internet stalk.
