Quite a dark brooding novel. The main character portraying almost the role of an anti hero. Grace has nearly as many flaws in her character as she has commendable traits. These flaws make Grace a very believable person, one you know you can trust yet fear equally.

This novel certainly brings home the difficulties and heart breaks of being a police officer at the same time as being a compelling novel. The first few chapters do not appear to flow together seemingly disjointed, however as the novel proceeds you see that the chapters represent how Grace is feeling. As the plot continues to unfold the consistency become apparent.

The dark unknown fear of what is happening to police officers is kept in the background. This makes this novel quite unique, the mystery appearing secondary to life on the police force and the evolution of Grace.

Sections of the book are quite spiritual and although relevant do at times seem a little excessive.

The ending was so apt and in keeping with the rest of this novel,it certainly leaves the reading hoping for more. A thoroughly engrossing novel that can be enjoyed by those seeking mystery, suspense and life like characters.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

HASH(0xa67aa378) out of 5 stars Suspenseful and well-crafted June 6 2015

Full disclosure: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first part of the series and enjoyed it very much, but I like this one even better. It's an exciting installment, and the action ramps up another notch. Grace is the only person who sees a connection between the deaths of her fellow police officers, and no one wants to dig further. As the story progresses, the mystery deepens, with scattered clues linking the murders.

Grace is one of my favorite characters. I feel like we really begin to see her emerging as more than just a rough-around-the-edges beat cop. The thread of the mystery continues, and Grace is the only one sure there’s more to it than meets the eye. Her suspicions are met with skepticism, especially because of her personal connections to some of the victims—is she seeing what she wants to see in order to bring them justice?

Meanwhile while that unfolds, Grace is busy interacting with a host of colorful characters. Her day-to-day adventures range from hilariously odd to harrowing to heartbreaking, sometimes all in the same chapter. Through it all, she’s maturing even without realizing it, steadied by the growing love between herself and her girlfriend.

With all her triumphs and disappointments, Grace is a treasure to read. I’m looking forward to the exciting conclusion of this marvelous series.

HASH(0xa67aa600) out of 5 stars Impressive June 13 2015

I’m impressed at AJ’s ease in painting a scene with an intensity of emotion that the protagonist carries; making this a highly entertained story full of hilariously horrible luck and great tragedy. It’s a real roller coaster ride.

The only hitch is that there are errors in spelling and word placement that are sprinkled throughout the story. However, even the biggest grammar Nazi can forgive that because of the highly engaging and somewhat controversial nature of the plot.

The main character is very present and filled with a range of emotions that the reader will be hard pressed to not feel. However, some of the supporting characters seemed to be there only as a receiving vessel for those boiling emotions without emotion or wit of their own.

Overall, I give this novel a full five stars as the author, AJ wove a story that is rich and suspenseful with a complex lead character that you want to know more and more about. I look forward to the next installment.

P.S. Thanks for that great cliffhanger!

Grace's story just gets better and better. And wilder. The action and Grace's interactions with others, as well as her thoughts and feelings are so intense. I have been waiting anxiously for Book Two in this series and A J Smith has delivered a fantastic tale. I stayed up ajmost all night reading it. Couldn't put it down.

I understand this is fiction, and when you write a book/TV show/movie, there has to be tons of action to keep the audience entertained. That being said, I wish the author would have done a little more research in police procedures before writing some of the action scenes. Fine, Grace gets in a foot pursuit (or 4) every shift, always catches the bad guy, does minimum paperwork, and heads back out for more, and that's fun to read. I almost had to stop reading, however, when, after shooting a guy, and getting shot herself, she just takes her ride along home to change his pants, and then completes her shift. No hospital visit to check for injuries that would occur even if you "just" get hit in the vest, no new vest to replace the vest that now has a bullet in it, and no investigation into to whether the shooting was justified. I love all the action, even if it isn't all realistic, but that was way over the top for a character who has been under scrutiny about her mental well being since the attempt on her life in the last book, and the subsequent Ptsd she now has in this book.

I enjoyed the book, and wasn't bothered by the few typos, since that's expected with smaller publishers. I'm hoping there's a 3rd book, because I'll definitely read it to see who the killer or killers are. I'm not going to give this book a poor rating, I'm just hoping the next one doesn't go so far off the beaten path of reality.

This is a series that needs to be read in order. Fallen from Grace picks up a few months after the For by Grace.
Grace is a police officer that has been through a lot. In the past months, someone has been targeting police officers, and she has lost a lot of her friends and her closest friend and father figure Daniel Mason Brady and his wife, Carol. Her relationship with Chaplin Amya is up and down as is her career and life.
I like this book and series. I wouldn’t call it a romance as more a police procedural. We get day by day bits of Grace’s life and what she does on her job each day. Some of her arrests are quite funny, some heartwrenching and some suspenseful. I like that Gace seems real, but I have to say some of the beatings she gets almost daily seem a bit rough for her just to get up and walk away. Also, there are a lot of big time skips making it a bit hard to figure out the timeframe.
I do like that in this book we get more of Grace’s relationship with Amya though I would still like more of that instead of her avoiding her but then meeting up with her it felt a bit wishy-washy and confusing.
Overall the story is pretty good if you like lots of characters, suspense, drama, police procedural, and a f/f romance.
