The visuals are nice however. It's worth a play through, but perhaps wait until it goes into the sale bin.
I have ONLY played on Survival with perma death.
This has been one of the more enjoyable games I have played this year. Playing with most of the assists off, no hunter vision etc is extremely challenging but rewarding game play. You actually have to fear the animals as much as any enemy npc. Food and hunting is crucial to your survival. Being very cautious walking around the absolutely amazing environment, completing quests and hunting for food with the most basic of weapons is an absolute joy and shift form the everyday run and gun.
Permanent death can be very rough, for example I found a bear near the beginning of the game and thought I could handle him. Boy was I wrong, he threw me around like a rag-doll until my HP hit 0. Oh well lesson learned start up a new game and back into the jungle I went. More cautious and alert then before, feeling just as much like prey as the hunter.
The only thing missing from this game so far would be a full Co-op campaign. Being able to take on this crazy challenge with a friend would be absolutely amazing. If one dies it is game over for both of you. Maybe in the next one Ubisoft.
Great game, would recommend as a verified purchaser.
The setting is the Stone Ages, and as a result of that, I didn't think the Far Cry formula would translate into this setting, because guns and cars and explosives have been a big part of the franchise before. And because Ubisoft brings in new game mechanics, the game still feels great to play, just like Far Cry 3 or 4, and the absence of guns doesn't detract too much from the experience. There are bows, as well as throwable weapons which basically replace guns but feel great to use on their own and work well in the setting. Absence of cars is not noticeable and there are animals to ride like you did with elephants in Far Cry 4, but they now serve as a means of transportation, and while they may be slower, the game immerses you in its setting enough to not care about that. But of course you're still liberating enemy camps and climbing towers which are in this case campfires. There is additionally a greater focus on melee weapons compared to other games, and you can use a bunch of melee weapons in the game. The melee combat feels and works great too.
Far Cry Primal introduced a few new systems into the franchise. There is an emphasis on taming different animals around you, and you can do so with most animals in the game, sabretooth tigers and badgers are included. These animals can then be used in combat and to a great effect, as a predator will fight enemies alongside you and so on. In my opinion, a bigger emphasis on animals is very cool and interesting, as now you're not only killing them for skins but also use them as your allies.Read more ›
