About the Author
Joel Fuhrman, M.D., is a board-certified family physician in private practice in Belle Mead, New Jersey, who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional methods. He is an active staff member of Hunterdon Medical Center and provides nutritionally oriented medical care to patients as well as nutritional education to other physicians.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I was mostly interested in how to fast, how to break a fast properly, and what physical symptoms to expect during a fast. I did feel some hunger during the first day but that went away when I drank water. I did not feel any hunger on the second or third day but I did miss the sensation of eating and tasting food. I felt just fine with no headaches or lightheadedness. I plan on going on my second three day fast in a couple months. By summer of next year, I hope to go on a seven to ten day fast, with a doctor's supervision.
You do not have to be supervised on a short three day fast but he does advise medical supervision for longer fasts. He also provides addresses and resources for medical professionals to receive training supervising patients on fasts.
He explains that even a thin person can fast safely. Dr. Fuhrman also advises that you eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and avoid junk food, especially sodas. I rarely give a book five stars but this one deserves it.
Viz the Medical Journals there are over 500 studies on fasting, though much more research is needed. Dr Fuhrman mentions several of these on his website DrFuhrman.com and in his book.
If you undertake a fast for any period of time, I would talk to a doctor who is TRAINED in fasting, like Dr. Fuhrman, who has supervised 1000's of fasts. A physician who is not trained in fasting can be harmful since he is unable to differentiate between symptoms of a fast and symptoms of disease. An uneducated layman is even worse.
If you are looking for a step by stop program, then you will need Dr. Fuhrman's upcoming book, as the present book primarily focuses on principles, and the spectacular results achievable in reversing diseases such as uterine fibroids, lupus, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes (type II), and many, many others.
If you are skeptical I suggest you read this book and judge for yourself. You owe yourself that much. Let me end with a quote from Dr. Fuhrman's book:
After hearing about a natural food diet and therapeutic fasting, individuals may enthusiastically give it a try and get well. It is also possible that they may become excited about the sensibility of this approach and the prospect of finally recovering their health, but then go home to their friends and family and become discouraged after being told that they would be crazy for attempting such an "outrageous" treatment. There are many websites and books on fasting, but I trusted the opinion of the author, since he is a medical doctor, and frequently gives evidence for his assertions. His medical explanations help clarify not only what is helpful and dangerous in a fast, but why. This, in my opinion, separates a credible expert from a crackpot in many fields and particularly for fasting.
Some items which may be constued as negative: this is not a step by step guide to fasting (as the author strongly reccomends medical supervision for fasts), and the author spends considerable space on his agenda about the importance of vegan dieting(though dieting is essential to a healthy fast, before and after).
This book is definitely worth the money for learning the principles of fasting.
