"A lonely teen discovers a secret wormhole to a distant planet—and a distant boy who steals her heart—in this young-adult sci-fi romance." - Kirkus Reviews
***NEW! 2015th revised edition!!

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly’s life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Would you fight to be with the one you truly love? What cost would you be willing to sacrifice for that love?

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

HASH(0xb4223e1c) out of 5 stars Review via Pretty Little Pages Blog June 8 2014
By Kristen @ Pretty Little Pages - Published on
Format: Paperback
Fields of Elysium falls into the lump with a lot of other Indie/small press books. The book has so much potential with an interesting draw, but the lack of polishing really slows down the story. A.B. Whelan is masterful at building a vivid world that seeps into your thoughts and envelops you as you read. But whenever you stumble upon one of those unpolished parts, it breaks the trance and brings you crashing back to reality.

There are a lot of competing stories inside of Fields of Elysium. I felt like the romantic aspects overshadowed the others, though I was more keen to learn about the world of Arkana. As a fan of science fiction, I kept holding out for more about those aspects but I don't feel like it ever came. That isn't to say that A.B. Whelan doesn't deliver a good story, though. Besides the moments of drag, my interest was kept and I had no issues following the story to find out what would happen.

Molly is likable as a main character, and I see a lot of people enjoying her. I certainly had my faults with her (don't we always?), but I did get very invested in her story. I think with more attention to developing a more polished version, Fields of Elysium could easily be a five star book for young adults in science fiction. As is, it's still an enjoyable read with a dose of patience.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to A.B. Whelan and NetGalley.

HASH(0xb422a2c4) out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK! An enchanting new world FULL of adventure!! March 7 2013
By Courtney Robichaux - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I don't even know where to begin! I LOVED this book so much!!! The characters are amazing, the new world is so beautiful, the plot is suspenseful, and the romance is perfect!

The book begins with Molly's life in Beverly Hills. She doesn't seem to fit in after moving from New Jersey. She makes a few friends but her life doesn't feel complete. When her overprotective parents finally grant her a little bit of freedom, she gets so much more than she bargained for! She takes a hike one afternoon, slips through a wormhole, and finds herself on another planet, Arkana! She quickly makes friends with a group of guys. The slightly conceded but cute and happy Weston is drawn to her immediately, while the strong and mysterious Victor is cold and distant. Although Molly loves Weston's easy manner, she can't keep Victor out of her thoughts.

Arkana is a stunningly beautiful and magical place! Time moves 5x faster there than on Earth so Molly tries to spend as much time on Arkana as she can. I was completely enthralled reading about her adventures on this planet! The creatures in Arkana are creatively written, well described, and sometimes dangerous. The technology is slightly more advanced there. The clean energy source of the crystals could be something the Earth desperately needs. The most amazing thing is that the people on that planet know peace. The way of life for their citizens is fascinating. Some citizens are wealthy but even the natives in the woodlands are happy with what they have. There are no wars or violence. It's hard to imagine a place created that way. It sounds and looks like paradise! Don't mistake peaceful for boring though. They do have sporting events. When reading about the Ecmentur games, I was on the edge of my seat. I wish I could visit this beautiful and peaceful place like Molly does!

This story was a "coming of age" of sorts for Molly. She realizes the responsibility of keeping this forbidden secret and decides to grow up. She becomes stronger physically to keep up with life on Arkana and she becomes stronger mentally too. She realizes how to better treat others around her and how to stand up for herself. I also really liked Molly's parents. Although overprotective, they were involved in her life and gave her great advice. It's true; it's very difficult to discern the reasons behind other's actions. You never know what inner emotional battles they are fighting.

Victor is a great example of that. His whole life was focused on getting revenge for the death of his parents by earthlings. He's angry and bitter and pushes Molly away. But when she walks into his life, she challenges his lifelong belief that all earthlings -and Earth itself- are evil. Victor has this inner turmoil that is easy to understand and Molly heals him. When he finally opened up to her, my heart soared. The sweet words, watching the vivid sunsets, riding through the trees with red petals, watching the butterflies, the campfire, the kisses...*sigh*. You really need to read this!

Now that they're finally together, I cannot wait to read about their future adventures. The religious undertones in the book were subtle. I found it sweet that when Victor was in danger, she prayed for him. I'm so in awe of this book and I could easily see this being made into a captivating and successful movie. I'm eagerly awaiting book 2 so I can escape to Arkana once again!

HASH(0xb422a78c) out of 5 stars GOOD CLEAN FUN! A MUST READ! Nov. 4 2013

I liked this book a whole HECK of a lot better than I thought I would. I liked it so much I finished it in less than 24 hours and I stayed up past midnight to do so. hee hee I loved it!

I escaped into this fantasy world, I loved every moment of it. It was glued to my hands. With detailed descriptions, to sweet romance, the action, the characters, and to all the twist and turns in the story, it had me captivated from page one and just kept me on edge.

Arkana is a world both old and new, it reminded me of something that would come out of a star trek episode where the people are so far advanced and yet their ideals, manner, and dress are old.

Molly, the protagonist in this story moves from a small town with everything she has ever known to California where she attends Beverly Hills High School. She hasn't made any real friends about something that bothered me about Molly at first was all her moping. GAH! I was rolling my eyes and thinking "oh brother... do something about your situation don't just sit there and wait for things to happen!" but then Molly discovers Arkana and suddenly her life changes. She meets people who want to be her friends. She begins to like a boy while trying to figure out why another hates her so much. And suddenly she wants to be in Arkana all the time but can't and is told to keep it a secret and never return. Things happen and she does return and ends up learning so much about herself and human nature in general.

Victor was a wonderful character to read about. His real human struggle within himself as he starts to like the very person he hates-Molly. As we learn why his hatred is so deep and why he won't allow himself to feel for her felt very real and my heart ached for him. He drew on my emotions as I got to know him and I just simply love him as a character.

If you love fantasy, and are a sucker of romance like me, plus are wanting a little bit of everything, then this book is for you. What a beautiful world the author has created! Gosh, I can’t wait to go back and find out what happens in book 2!
