The Final Quarter by Anne Lange

Book two in the A New League series

A quarterback facing the end of his career must come to peace with his past, and accept his present, before he can move on with his future.

Mitch Ryland accomplished what his father said he never would—he made something of himself.

When his wife suggests she’d like to start a family, Mitch is thrown for a loop. He’s never told her about his life before he ended up with his foster parents, or his plans never to become a father. So when he’s taken out of the game, his failings from the past come back to haunt him, and Mitch blames his injury on his loss of focus. He’s unprepared for his career as a professional quarterback to be over. Nor is he ready to tell his wife about why football is so important to him. He’d rather put emotional and physical distance between them and focus on getting back in the game.

Serena Ryland has dreamed of becoming a mother. But when she mentions the idea to her husband, he freezes her out and she has no idea why. She’s worried that if they don’t start talking soon, she’ll lose him forever. When he refuses to come home to mend from an injury, she takes matters into her own hands, determined to spend more time with him, hoping to reignite the romance in their relationship. But she’s unprepared for the things she learns on this trip. Her husband has been carrying a few secrets that just might change the outlook of their future.

A New League series

Fame. Fortune. Glamour and glory. The big leagues. Not everyone makes it to the top. Select few are good enough to get there. And once the dream has been realised, a fall from the pedestal is hard to accept. Defeat harder to admit. Moving on harder to do. Especially when the road to get there was scattered with deep potholes to begin with.

Sinful encounters and erotic moments can occupy the mind and the body while difficult decisions are being made, maybe even delay the inevitable. But in the end, only the support and love of that special someone can help those who have fallen to stand up again, and realise they’re in a new league now—one where dreams are shared—not with an entire world watching, waiting to see if you’ll rebound, but with the ones who will stand by and catch you if you don’t.

These are not the stories of the men or women playing the game, but rather what happens after the game is done playing with them.

About Anne Lange

Shoes are her addiction, but books are her passion. Anne Lange grew up with a love for reading. If you take a close look, she’s got either a book, her Kindle or her Kobo—maybe all three—tucked into her bag or a pocket when she leaves the house. You know, just in case there’s time to sneak in a chapter or ten. Anne reads many genres of romance, but prefers to write sexy stories, often with a dash of humor, and usually with a side of those sinful pleasures your mom never told you about.

Oh, and always a happily ever after.

While embarking on this wild journey of becoming a romance author, Anne juggles a full time job and a family. Not always successfully. Who needs a clean house every day? And what’s wrong with cereal for dinner? She lives in Ontario, Canada with her wonderfully supportive husband, three awesome kids who are growing up way too fast, and Rocky the bearded dragon.

HASH(0x9e62bf3c) out of 5 stars Hot, HOt, HOT!!!!! July 14 2015

Format: Kindle Edition
Every now and then, I like to read short erotica, and having sports mixed in with it is even better. In this 145 page short and sexy read, “The Final Quarter” was HOT! Not only was the sex written very well, I loved that I really felt a connection between Mitch and Serena, and that they truly loved each other. While Mitch had his issues, I loved how Serena didn’t give up on him, and tried to help him through a dark period.

If you’re looking for a quick, sexy erotica, then this is definitely a book for you. This was my first book by Anne Lange, and it won’t be my last!

This was a good read! Scared that his career is coming to an end, Mitch thinks that he will be a disappointment to his wife, Serena. But all Serena wants is to spend time with her husband. Because when you love someone, it doesn't matter what they do for a living, all that matters is getting to spending time with the one you love.

Mitch Ryland is a quarterback who is injured during a game. While he tries to hide the injury from the coach and the doctors it gets too bad. He is then haunted by his late father’s words that he would amount to nothing while pushing is wife away in the process. Serena Ryland knows something is wrong with Mitch and is determined to find out what and help him regardless of his wishes.

The beginning of the story leaves wondering how this book will end. By the end of the first chapter, I excited to see how this book will turn out. The author did a good job of drawing the reader into the world she created. The world is very realistic and the author established a sense of time and location to help the reader created a picture of what the world would look like. The pace of the story was a bit slow at some points and fast is others. The main characters and the secondary characters were fascinating and believable. I loved that no matter how tough things got Serena stood by Mitch. While Mitch has many faults he handled them in a realistic and believable way.

The point of view alternated between Serena and Mitch, giving the reader a glimpse inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines. The main conflict of the story is Mitch dealing with losing his job while dealing with the demons of his past and moving forward. The characters seemed to fit the overall storyline. The level of conflict is perfect, anymore and it would have detracted from the overall storyline. The dialogue between the characters was sincere and distinct. The characters voice seemed to match not only the setting but seemed to fit their overall personality. The ending was a bit predictable but this book is more about the journey to the end than the end itself. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

The Final Quarter is the second book in A New League series by Anne Lange. While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel with ease.

HASH(0x9eeaa06c) out of 5 stars A satisfying emotional sports romance July 23 2015
By Em & M Books - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Unlike most sports romance stories, The Final Quarter focused on the emotional side of an athlete who is faced with a decision that may end his career and the toll it takes on his marriage. This was an emotional read that had me tearing up and then smiling, loving how Serena takes control of her life and pulls out all the stops to ensure that her marriage survives.

Serena was so relatable. She loves her husband and knows that his actions are a result of the pressure he feels as the quarterback of his football team, but she also knows that she can’t continue in a marriage that has her doubting herself and unhappy. I love that although she will do whatever it takes to try and fix her marriage, she also realizes that she also needs to do things for herself, in this case taking a freelance photography job, something she has a passion for but has put to the side to be there to support Mitch.

My heart went out to Mitch, especially as the story of his childhood unfolds and we learn more about why he is the way he is. He doesn’t know anything but football, but he’s also savvy enough to realize that there may be options for him if and when his career is over. As he is faced with an injury that could be career ending, instead of leaning on his wife for support, he pulls away, which of course causes issues in his marriage. I did get frustrated with him trying to deal with things on his own, but again, understanding some of his issues made some of his actions understandable.

Watching Serena remind Mitch of what they have together was wonderful. It was sexy and steamy, and it was also satisfying to see just how much Mitch meant to her and what she was willing to do. And did I mention it was sexy and steamy? Yeah, definitely sexy and steamy!

This was a quick read and although it was short (about 145 pages) it left me feeling satisfied with the story that was told. The pacing was good, especially how the characters and romance develops over the course of the story, and the ending played out perfectly. A nice choice for any romance lover!

I received a copy of the book from the author for an honest review.

HASH(0x9fdfef54) out of 5 stars Final Quarter July 24 2015
By Kim U - Published on

This is the first book I have read by the author, and I was able to easily read it as a standalone without having read the first story in the series.

Mitch's injury has placed his future in question and he has no idea what to do with himself or what that future could possibly look like without playing football. He is pretty wrapped up in his own head and pushes everyone away including his wife. He loves Serena but her recent hints about starting a family are adding to his tailspin. Mitch is a good guy, but a childhood filled with his father's misplaced anger and demeaning comments left him with a boatload of lingering self doubt that has convinced him the old man was right: he is a failure and not fit to be loved, much less a worthy father.

Serena is hurting and desperate to save her marriage, so she concocts a plan to get Mitch to loosen up a little. Although he tries to hide from her and shut her out, she enlists the help of Mitch's brother to plan a few surprises to allow then to reconnect. They have some naughty fun that reminds them what they have been missing that are filled with some really hot moments. Just when they seem to be making progress, a final secret from Mitch's past pops up and shakes Serena's confidence.

Considering they are married and the depth of the love and connection they seemed to share, it felt a bit odd that they never discussed even the basics of his childhood before his foster family but it happens I guess. Mitch was stubborn and a typical guy when it comes to sharing his feelings but he got it together in the end. It was refreshing to read about a married couple and overall I thought The Final Quarter was a quick enjoyable read. 3.5 to 4 stars
