Isobel Hickey is struggling to cope with the sudden death of her husband – we learn how he died late in the novel. Her teenage children, sister and friends worry she’s having a breakdown. She has unusual encounters with strangers nobody else sees and her dog seems to sense invisible beings. Is she imagining them? But the people around her experience some of the events. Her belief these are due to supernatural action, are dismissed by those around her.
These incidents grow more disturbing and violent and Isobel’s personality changes, causing her family and friends great concern. Events come to a ‘head’* .The skill of the writer is to take us into Isobel’s head where we experience what she does. Are these events real or in her imagination? We can’t be sure but we have to follow her to the end and see how it pans out.
Very enjoyable and engaging read with well realised characters. The sign of a good book is it makes you experience the emotions of the characters and this certainly did. Recommended.
*(bad pun but couldn’t resist)
