Product Description

From Amazon

Der Fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) was Richard Wagner's first big success, following his promising but less-than-hit compositions, Die Feen (The Fairies) and Rienzi. Today, many still find Dutchman the most accessible of Wagner's works, and a good choice for the neophyte. You can follow the score and see how Wagner achieved his orchestral effects--like the tense, stormy music of the Dutchman's crew--with this full score from Dover. A full score is more fun for the armchair conductor, and more useful for the student, but they're not as good a deal for working singers who just need the vocal lines and piano accompaniment. Dover Scores are reprints of out-of-copyright editions from other publishers, and sometimes contain errors that have been corrected in more recent versions, but they're still the biggest bargain going in printed music.

About the Author

Composer and conductor Richard Wagner (1813 83) is best known for his four-opera classic, "The Ring." Unlike most other composers, Wagner wrote both the scenario and libretto for his operas."

That pretty much says it. It serves the purpose adequately, but it's not a pleasure to have or use in itself.

HASH(0xa7d3bbc4) out of 5 stars Flying Dutchman Score Jan. 26 2011

Dover's facsimile of the 1896 Fürstner edition is excellently reproduced, with admirably clear musical notation (as one would expect from a late 19th-century Berlin specialist musical publisher) and only a couple of misprints, which in a score of this scale is remarkable. For home- or student-study this edition can be warmly recommended. German-speakers (or, like this reviewer, Anglo-German) may find the interstitial Italian libretto an irritation. But at this price, who can complain, especially as it has a sewn spine, which will bear re-covering in hardback long after the cover has become worn.

Very clearly written music. Well labled, page numbers listed so it makes parts of the opera easy to find. Fair size print. Only issue is that the book is so tall that the book doesnt fit the height of the shelves on by book shelf lol. As this product description says "Dover Scores are reprints of out-of-copyright editions from other publishers, and sometimes contain errors that have been corrected in more recent versions". I don't know this opera well enough yet to be able tell if there are any errors in this score, but this is a fair price for a good quality printing of the score. I do recommed it :)

HASH(0xa7d41144) out of 5 stars No English translation May 15 2013

I wanted an opera score with the English translation right along with the original German. The description on line did not so indicate if the translation was done, which the seller should indicate.

The score score was fine except for no English translation.
