“Attention is so important that ordinary people take it for granted, while scientists subject it to microanalysis. Product Description

In Focus, Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman, author of the #1 international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, offers a groundbreaking look at today’s scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention.

Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to survive in a complex world.

Goleman boils down attention research into a threesome: inner, other, and outer focus. Drawing on rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business, he shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, and explains how those who rely on Smart Practices—mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental “prosthetics” that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain greatness—excel while others do not.

I found the book a very interesting read and thought provoking.

However Goleman, virtually does not give the reader any "how to advice."

When lot's of free "How to advice" is available on the net, I expect to receive some insights into how to apply an authors ideas. This book seems to be a philosophical marketing tool for you to then purchase the "How To Package."

There's little question about Goleman's expertise in the field of emotional intelligence and human performance; however, his writing style may leave your head spinning. Goleman has brought credibility and reputability to emotional intelligence through his thorough and methodical research; unfortunately, that doesn't make for very good reading (IMHO). This book is filled with outstanding content, but it's extremely difficult to find the hard-hitting tidbits of value amongst the brain science and data. I would love someone to write "Focus: In Layman's Terms," so that I could easily find the value that I know is hidden in this book

The book is mainly a series of stories about various people and how their "focus" has influenced their lives. If you're interested in a long-winded explanation of the topic that is still devoid of enough detail to provide any practical knowledge you, you found it. What a waste of time.

This book is well researched but remains a comfortable and enjoyable read. Sensible and balanced, Goleman gives reasons for our lack of focus and provides thoughtful ways to stay present. His comments on ADD and kids in general are genuine. Although guarded about his cents on the addictive aspects of digital games and teens, he recommends one that enhances focus. I am re-reading this book and will recommend it to some teacher friends.

I enjoyed this book as much as Emotional Intelligence and got as much out of it personally. In an age where there is less and less focus this is an important book and a real reminder of the importance of its subject.

If you are starting out on your career this could be one of the most important books for you to read. Well set out, great examples, all round interesting.

Another classic by Daniel Goleman that continues to build on emotional intelligence themes. This is not so much a self help book, as it's a great explanation of the latest insights into why some people are able to achieve more than other in their personal lives and in th work place.
