Review
"Sorting out the particulars of a Food Forest can be tricky, overwhelming and seemingly complex. But Darrell Frey's and Michelle Czolba's Book, The Food Forest Handbook changes all that! Through this in-depth practical book you will learn the strategies for effective planning, design, establishment and management of perennial polycultures. I found it fascinating how this design system has been utilized through the ages in many cultures to current times with a tour of successful food forests in varying climates. I recommend this book to all those who are bringing diversity to their planting schemes."
— Jude Hobbs, Permaculture land-use consultant, designer, and educator, Cascadia Permaculture
"Frey and Czolba share the valuable fruit of their decades of experience with this carbon-friendly gardening form. But they go beyond this to tour sites around the world to reap insight and inspiration. They also do a better job than any food forestry book I've seen of reminding us of the tropical origins of this form of multi-strata agroforestry."
— Eric Toensmeier, author, The Carbon Farming Solution
"Michelle Czolba's and Darrell Frey's decades of hands-on experience in permaculture and food production has allowed them to create a unique, important, and timely book. The authors have condensed two lifetimes of experience into a beautifully presented and essential volume. The Food Forest Handbook is an outstanding work that should be in the libraries of urban planners, designers, gardeners, property owners, naturalists, and even survivalists". Save the Earth" isn't just a slogan; this book shows the reader how to make it a practice."
— Joseph Jenkins, author, The Humanure Handbook, The Slate Roof Bible, and Balance Point
"Darrell Frey and Michelle Czolba have recovered this truth from ancient wisdom: forests are successional recyclers. What happens if we were to drop the boundary between the built environment and nature? Wouldn't we all be much better off? The Food Forest Handbook guides our first steps along that path."
— Albert Bates, author, The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide, The Biochar Solution, and The Paris Agreement

- Reviewed in Canada on October 25, 2019Verified PurchaseThis was a gift for my daughter and she loves it!
- Reviewed in Canada on October 12, 2024Would make a good addition to any permaculture library. It is a well laid out handbook, with clearly delineated sections and concepts for quick and easy reference. This structure makes it ideal for the curious neophyte for a quick survey of the Food Forest and Permaculture design principles, while also being of use to more experienced practitioners who desire a clearly articulated reference or field guide of ideas and principles.
Beginning with a very brief but succinct review of the history and concept of the food forest, the handbook moves on to express the categories and steps most pertinent to the design and implementation of your own food forest. This is a great sourcebook, not encyclopedic but perfect for digging in where you are in your planting journey. It includes advice and direction for where to pursue information in the field and regarding your own climate, environment, and situation; allowing it to be the topographical survey and starting point of your own food forest, both materially and conceptually.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 29, 2022Verified PurchaseAlthough I already had some knowledge of the permaculture concepts, this book was a good handbook to provide the extra motivation and confidence that I needed to go from concept to plan so I can execute my vision of transforming my land and garden into a food forest. I would provide a higher book review if the layout of the booking was organized with an enhanced layout using tables and bullets to present the information. Overall, it served the purpose of providing the confidence to draft my plan and layout of the plants I will be planning this summer.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 25, 2024From traditional indigenous forest cultivation to examples of present-day forest gardening, Frey and Czolba describe a possibility of abundance within our home and community landscapes. This book will guide your though goal setting, site assessment, designing, planning, maintaining, and propagating a food forest, with plenty of plant resources to research your design. As a permaculture designer, I recommend this book to anyone new to permaculture or food forest gardens. It offers a wealth of knowledge in an easy-to-read format.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2024One of the standout features of The Food Forest Handbook is its holistic approach. The authors emphasize the importance of observing natural ecosystems and mimicking their patterns to create a self-sustaining garden. They also highlight the benefits of biodiversity, showcasing how a variety of plants can work together to enhance soil health, control pests, and maximize yields.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a complete novice, this book offers valuable insights and step-by-step guidance. Frey and Czolba's passion for permaculture is evident throughout, and their practical advice is grounded in years of hands-on experience.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 26, 2024The Food Forest Handbook by Darrell Frey and Michelle Czolba is a hands-on guide for anyone curious about creating their own food forest. Whether you’re a beginner or have some gardening experience, this book breaks things down in a way that feels doable, without overwhelming you with too much technical jargon. And I really like that!
Frey and Czolba take you through everything you need to know—from how to choose the right spot to how to layer plants to create a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem. What’s great is that they focus on how food forests aren’t just about growing food; they’re also about supporting biodiversity, improving soil, and helping tackle climate change, which makes this a must-read for anyone into sustainability.
The real-world examples and easy-to-follow diagrams make it easily digestible (ha! Pun intended!) for even the greenest (I’m on fire!) of novices, offering tips and insights from actual food forest projects. You can tell the authors really knows their stuff, and they're great at making the whole process seem more manageable, even if you’re starting from scratch.
I really enjoyed this book. It is packed with inspired ideas to help you transform a simple garden into something more…
- Reviewed in Canada on August 10, 2024The Food Forest Handbook is a great introduction to understanding perennial polyculture. If building a food forest is something that interests you and you are uncertain where to start gathering information, you have come to to right spot. Not only do the authors give you plenty of information within this book, they also point you in the direction of other sources to help deepen your knowledge if you want to know more about certain topics.
I particularly enjoyed how we followed a couple of gardens throughout the entire book and the process of how they were made. They also provide you with lists of plants and examples of layouts. I will be making reference to this book when I take a closer look at some future projects.
Lastly, the language throughout the book was easy to understand. So, if you are new to gardening you can still understand the terms and techniques used.

RachaelReviewed in the United States on September 15, 20175.0 out of 5 stars To me words like ‘food forest’ and ‘permaculture’ mean gardening with a purpose
Verified PurchaseAs a novice gardener I found the information to be written in simple, straight forward language with clear examples -which I needed. To me words like ‘food forest’ and ‘permaculture’ mean gardening with a purpose, and that’s what I want to do. I quickly discovered that these topics can get quite involved and technical. In fact, I've looked through other books and could barely understand what they were talking about, never mind actually doing any of it. So for me, this book is the perfect resource for getting started. This book spells is out what a food forest is, why permaculture is a useful concept, and finally how to plan, design, and then actually plant a productive food forest in my own yard. My yard is now looking more like an organized garden and less like a mess .. also I haven’t purchased any herbs all summer because I am growing them!
