It's as if Mr. Koontz was tired of his readers begging for the finale so he lazily tossed together this book just to shut us up. I adored the first two books and was so looking forward to the third book, but it just did not compare; very disappointing. "Dead and Alive" regurgitates an all too common "good vs. evil" ending. It is the very definition of anticlimactic. The exciting suspense building in the first two books stops abruptly in book three, ends are tied but with bare minimum effort. Dean Koontz even manages the last minute predictable introduction of Duke, the loyal, wise and brave golden retriever. At least it is over.

A long time coming, this third in the modern Frankenstein reboot. This is not really a stand alone book and really needs to have the first two as prior reads. I understand that Hurricane Katrina threw off the author Koontz a few years ago so this one didn't come out on schedule. However, the final result now is a bit too much of a contractual obligation type effort. It starts out OK, as noted the reader needs the background of the previous instalments, with some fast paced gore and suspense. About half way you realize this isn't really going anywhere really juicy and it's a few hundred pages of filler. Some plot threads are dropped and the two central cops and Deucalion, the original man made man, are reduced to bit players. You get the impression the author lost interest in the project and wasn't sure how to end it up.

I am an avid reader and fan of Dean Kootnz. I read books one and two in the series even though they were co-authored with Dean. The set up in the first two books was intriging so I was anxious to see how it would be wrapped up.

I was disappointed in this book and see it as one of Dean's failures. Too bad. The Frankenstein legend needs updating and this book had many elements that alone would have made a wonderful story. Some plot elements seemed wasted such as the two cops on the hunt for monsters, or pointless such as the ugly dwarf freak and the lovely wife. That was just too weird for words. I suspect his previous co-authors created such a mess that it took him a lot of work to resolve the last book into some sembelence of valdiation for the readers.

The Dr. Frankstein character was well realized and very scary, but that alone isn't enoungh for me to recommend the book.

Look forward to more books, Dean. Keep up the good work.

A complete and utter disappointment. Basically recycled from his other novel "Midnight". Nothing original here...
