HASH(0xa4945bd0) out of 5 stars Great Resource for Finding Free Software July 6 2012
By Howard Young - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The Software Treasure Chest is a great resource for locating and downloading software which you can use for free! It covers all types of software which the majority of computer users will ever need. However, it misses some of the hidden gems such as the alternative to MS Project.

To make this a complete book, it really needs to include other cloud-based software. How about using Evernote instead of Onenote, or Google Docs instead of the MS Office alternatives?

Of course, some of the more computational intensive applications that require a desktop/laptop to run are fully covered and I can't wait to download and try them out!

HASH(0xa4a0c570) out of 5 stars Free + Saved Time Can't be Beat July 9 2012
By Paul Powell - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
In very simple terms the cost of this book about 1% of what you would spend on the name brand software, any questions? On a more detailed level I was very impressed with the list of programs and the depth of understanding. I often struggle sorting one program versus another, download one and later find out it only has a limited trial offer, now no worries this eBook makes that problem go away and saved me a lots of time in the process.

HASH(0xa46d218c) out of 5 stars Not for people who already know about Open Source and other free software March 7 2013

I didn't find one piece of software I could use that I didn't already know about. This might be a good guide if you are a Windows user and don't know about free software. But if you use Windows be careful about downloading software because you are so apt to get a virus. Only download from trusted sites.

HASH(0xa54099b4) out of 5 stars Well written but not well researched. Oct. 12 2012

The author hits the high points in this very short book, but leaves out an enormous amount. There's no mention of gimpphoto, just to name one example, which anyone with Photoshop experience would want to know about (rather than GIMP.) Only the best-known programs in a relative handful of categories get any mention but the author's judgement and choices are usually quite good. Still, it's not really something you should be paying for; it would make more sense as a blog entry. You should be able to Google for an equivalent magazine or blog article. Nonetheless, because it's useful for rank beginners and well-written and formatted, I'm going to bump my review up from two stars.

To add an argument in favor of open source programs (even if you're rich): Open Source programs are very stable over the years, that is, they will be available on newer operating systems in the future and will evolve fairly slowly. That makes them perfect for tasks you don't do all that often. Your familiarity with a program won't become obsolete any time soon and you can quickly download it again a few years from now if a similar task pops up and get right to work. They are also usually available in portable form, which takes a bit of a load of your OS, they say, and allows you to take them with you easily if you need to.
