"One chews coffee beans while gargling 200 F water for four minutes; pressing with the tongue, coffee is filtered through the teeth: is this the French press you refer to?" -- M. Python

AN INTRODUCTION TO COFFEE AMBROSIA.

It's a quest for flavor. It's all about flavor. You are here searching for the best quality French Press, one that delivers the most flavorful coffee possible. You might be new to French Press and are rightly skeptical about the vulnerability and safety of a glass model. Or, you might be experienced, a Bodum or BonJour refugee exasperated by having to replace your second, or third, or even your seventh broken glass beaker. No cuts? Lucky you. Been there.

Below: First is a look at buying a French Press, followed by a Review of the Frieling French Press, then info on grinders, accessories, buying coffee, and brewing the best French Press.

SHOPPING FOR A FRENCH PRESS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

FIRST, WHAT IS FRENCH PRESS? Call it French Press, Press Pot, Cafetiere, Plunger Pot, Pressed Coffee, Coffee Press, or Cafe a Piston, it is all the same. Invented by an Italian man, popularized in France, "French Press" has emigrated to North America. The apparatus itself is strikingly simple: A handled pot, a lid, and a plunger. A French Press can be made of glass, metal, plastic, or ceramic. The pot is never placed on a stove burner...hot water is poured over ground coffee and steeped a few minutes, the plunger is pressed down, the brewed coffee is then poured into cups.

French Press is a hands-on brewing method that allows the user to control brewing variables, adjusting for personal taste.

not as promised, it will hold the coffee hot for less than 15 min hot, a bit of an issue putting the parts together, fit a bit weird and not as easy as a french press should. based on the price not really worth it.

I have had 4 glass presses before buying this one. The glass presses have all cracked. You can even use regular ground coffee and there is no bypassing of the screen. For the price I should have bought this press from the very beginning. Very high quality construction.

This is really well made and heavy duty. It's very heavy, you could probably knock someone out with it. It holds the heat for quite a long time, especially if you preheat the container by pouring hot water in it and letting the hot water sit in it before making your coffee. I recommend stirring it before you press it down, you'll notice a real difference in your coffee. My husband thought it tasted no different from a drip coffee maker until he stirred it and then he tasted a real difference. We both think it's worth the money.

Was looking to replace my Bodum Brazil press after finally breaking the glass carafe (surprised I didn't break it sooner haha). I don't drink coffee anymore but my husband has come to love the taste of it when made in a French press. I did some research and this one came up consistently as a top performer for a non-glass press. It was a lot more expensive than the Bodum one but I do like that I shouldn't ever have to replace it - it has worked very well so far (from about two months of use) and I expect it to for years to come. I was concerned about stainless steel imparting a taste, even most of the reviews said it didn't, and my husband confirmed that there was no taste other than the coffee itself. I have not had any issues with the spout dribbling when pouring the coffee, as some other reviewers have said.

I have been using this for well over a year now and it looks as great as the day I bought it. Looks aside, the functionality is amazing. Keeps the coffee hot and is super easy to clean. Other reviewers mentioning drips while pouring are either in a rush to get their coffee and pouring way to fast or don't have the lid on securely. Just pour your coffee with ease or wipe away the drips = no biggie and no reason to look at other items.

This is the French Press that you are looking for! It exudes refinement and quality while delivering awesome coffee. No fear of dropping this. Your floor will break sooner than this french press does.

Its pricey but well worth it!

Note regarding the size: I can get four decent size servings out of this size: 36-42 oz / 1.2 lt / 6 - 7 cup.

Enjoy!

The only thing missing is a preset timer so that it is ready when I wake up. A few minutes to boil the kettle and then a 5 minute wait for a great hot cup of coffee. Stays hot longer than if made in my Cuisinart drip coffee maker. Better flavour too. I buy a large bag of LaVazza coffee beans and grind it to the perculator setting in the store. Eight heaping tablespoons for a full pot. Wish the french press was a tad bigger as I have large coffee mugs, and would like to have two full mugs instead of 3/4 full. Grateful I opted for the stainless steel instead of cheaper glass models. Easy to clean and great heat retention. This purchase will last for years.

Should have bought one of these French press for my coffee years ago. Solid and unbreakable. Makes for perfect coffee, how-ever you like yours. Warm the container up with boiling water prior to brewing... and the coffee will stay nice and hot until the last cup.
Price was high, but for good reason, I believe... heavy construction... quality. You get what you pay for.
I wasted money on glass French press over the years... which always broke. This one I think will go the coffee distance.
