The FUJINON xf100-400mmf4.5-5.6 R lm OIS WR is a super telephoto zoom lens that covers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 152-609mm. The high performance optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups includes five ED lenses and one super ED lens to help reduce chromatic aberration that often occurs in telephoto lenses. The lens has been designed for handheld shooting with a 5.0-stop* Image stabilization system and weighs less than 1.4kg. The lens is also both water and dust resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as-10-degree c, so it is suitable for use in a wide range of outdoor shooting conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to repel water and dirt, further improving the toughness of the lens. CIPA guidelines, at telephoto end.
From the manufacturer
The FUJINON XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is a super telephoto zoom lens that covers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 152-609mm. The high performance optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups includes five ED lenses and one Super ED lens to help reduce chromatic aberration that often occurs in telephoto lenses. As a result, it delivers the highest image quality in its class. The lens has been designed for handheld shooting with a 5.0-stop* image stabilization system and weighs less than 1.4kg. Linear motor for fast autofocusing makes it perfect for shooting fast-moving subjects including aircraft and motorsports. The lens is also both water and dust resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C, so it’s suitable for use in a wide range of outdoor shooting conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to repel water and dirt, further improving the toughness of the lens.
All Fujifilm X Mount camera bodies will require a firmware update to be fully compatible with the lens. The update is scheduled to be released on or about 4 February 2016 for X-T1, X-T10, X-E2 users. Updates for other cameras will be released towards the end of March. Please refer to the website below to confirm your firmware version and the updates required.
Super Telephoto Zoom Lens
Reduced chromatic aberration to help deliver high resolution images
The optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups, which includes five ED lenses and a Super ED lens, delivers results comparable to a fluorite lens, and by reducing axial chromatic aberration it produces images packed with detail. The maximum magnification is 0.19x, enabling users to shoot telephoto macro images.
Class-leading 5.0-stop* image stabilization
A 5.0-stop image stabilization system — the most powerful in any super telephoto zoom lens — produces shake-free results even at the maximum telephoto setting of 609mm (35mm format equivalent). Also, if panning is detected, the lens automatically switches camera shake correction to the vertical plane only.
Fast, quiet AF thanks to twin linear motors
Twin linear motors are used to deliver fast focusing on moving subjects. The motors are also quiet, so the lens is ideal for shooting live music performances and theatre productions. Even faster AF shooting is possible with the focus limiter function, which limits the close focusing point to 5m.
* CIPA guidelines based, at telephoto end.
Water / dust resistance, -10°C low-temperature operation and fluorine coating
The lens features 13 water and dust resistant seals at 12 points, allowing you to shoot with confidence in tough outdoor environments.
The fluorine coating applied to the front lens element is water repellent so it’s less susceptible to smudges and can easily be cleaned.
Compatible with the 1.4x Teleconverter
The lens offers compatibility with the XF1.4X TC WR teleconverter. When attached, it becomes a 140-560mm F6.3-8 or 213-853mm (35mm format equivalent). Phase detection AF shooting remains possible, even at F8.
Lens hood with a polarizing filter window and lock mechanism
The lens hood features a sliding window so a polarizing filter can still be accessed even when the hood is in place.
The hood also features a locking mechanism to keep securely attached to the lens.
ARCA SWISS tripod plate
A lens plate (MLP-75XF) compatible with ARCA SWISS tripods is available as an optional extra. This plate is also compatible with the XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR.

29th May 2016:
I've been using this lens for more than a month now, I must say I still love this lens, its just too much fun, the images are really good, its easy to lose all contrast when shooting at the sun, which sucks, and this lens is prone to do. But its immensely capable, shoots sharp images, very good stabilizer, and focuses pretty well. I think if fuji comes out with a more sport related camera (using the X-PRO2) then this lens will really shine, even now its still a fantastic lens.
Edit: feb. 6 2017
After many months of practice I feel like I have a much better grasp on the use of telephoto lenses, having smooth pans and the settings I use, I moved to the XT2 with the battery grip, which really works a treat, also I use preset 4, this allows for birds in flight to be locked onto at speed, eliminating back focusing better.
The lens is large, but the weight is not the problem that I was led to believe it would be. It is amazingly easy to hand hold. I cushion the flat bottom of the tripod mount in my left hand and use the EVF, with the camera pressed firmly against my face. And it works well. All I can say about the image stabilization is that it is amazing. I am an older person and am more unsteady than I was when I was young. But the ability of the IS to visibly snap in is very obvious in the viewfinder, and the images at 600mm focal length equivalent are tack sharp in the center, which is the most important location for the use of this lens. I do use 1/250th of a second as my standard shutter speed and have not evaluated the IS at lower speeds. Suffice it to say that my shots come in sharp, and in focus. Also, the X PRO 2, shooting at f 5.6 at 600mm equivalent and 1/250th of a second, still allows moderately low light photography at ISO 3000-5000 with very little background noise and excellent color rendition.
As far as I am concerned, this lens is a keeper. It is expensive, but costs a lot less than the 600mm equivalent Olympus Pro lens. Despite the extra weight, I plan to keep it in my lens kit bag and discard my older 55-200 lens in the interest of over all weight reduction. Kudos to Fujifilm.
The tripod collar seems fine. It is sturdy and the adjustment is stable and doesn't seem to work itself loose. The foot of the tripod mount is threaded to add a quick release plate, whether arca swiss or other. The hood locks onto the lens with a very firm click and the door for accessing the circular polarizer is substantial and doesn't seem like it would break anytime soon. The construction is typical Fuji - solid, lots of metal, smooth in operation, every bit a premium and well-crafted product.
The images are stunning. The lens balances well on the X-T1 with the battery grip attached, and is well-balanced on the X-Pro 2 also. The Lowepro 11cm x 26cm lens case fits this lens - the hood makes it a bit tight, but perfectly acceptable,
