Use of this device requires that you preheat it until it's ready, so don't expect to be able to turn it on and just stick in the meat, you got to let it heat up for a few minutes.
I can put in frozen burger patties, bought (or formed) and it will be ready in no time. This would seem like a convenience, but you need to spend a little bit longer cleaning the plates. You don't want that grease getting caked-on.
Ribs, I boil in water for 45 minutes (from frozen) to soften, and then I sauce and grill. It tastes great and has nice texture to it. Most of the oil comes out, but that also depends on the part of the ribs.
The best thing to make with this is waffles. Just use one cup of Aunt Jemimas, and whatever else ingredients are required, grease/spray the waffle plates to prevent stick (I use a brush with olive oil) and the waffles come out perfect with no cleaning required on the plates. 5 minutes in the grill. Takes some practice to get used to knowing how much of the batter will overflow, but one cup usually should be split up between 4 waffles and the grill makes 2 at a time.
Bacon is also easy. It's a slow cook, but with the plate that's just an open tray, it works well. I've also used the open tray plate to bake spanakopita and terapita and it works well.
I checked another unit on display in Canadian Tire and it had loose plates as well. I call the company and they said it was built that way !!!
Turns out my son's roommate has this unit and they don't use it since it is SO hard to clean.
Too bad, the concept is excellent but the execution is terrible.
