The manual included a QR code to their instructional video on Youtube, which is fantastic for lazy people like myself. The setup took less than a minute, and I was ready to go.
The Siri remote supports both IR and Bluetooth signals. This remote, unfortunately, only supports IR. This means if your Apple TV is tucked away, it will not be able to receive the signal. I had to pull mine out of the TV stand.
Things on Apple TV you cannot do with this remote:
- Scribble seek: Unlike the Siri remote, there is no touch pad on this remote, and you are only allowed to skip 10 seconds at a time.
- Putting Apple TV to sleep: the remote does not support press-and-hold, which means you cannot put your Apple TV to sleep, unless you open the 'Settings' app and navigate through a series of menu items.
- Closing background apps: The remote does not support 'double tap'
Despite a number of things I cannot do with this remote, I still think this remote is worthwhile. Having to switch between multiple remotes is a nightmare.
However, at first it seemed like it was able to perform only the very basic functions on my 6-year old Toshiba TV like powering on or changing channels, but that others (source selection, TV configuration menu) were either unavailable or were working wonkily. That's because I used the codes listed in the enclosed instructions. I then went to the manufacturer's Web site (byjasco.com) and found there a whole different set of codes corresponding to the label inside the battery compartment. The first one I tried worked perfectly and I can now use the remote fully for my TV. I do not know if it works for Apple TV or networking capabilities since I do not find those things relevant for my needs and it would be picayune for me to complain about that.
It would be a good idea for GE to include a more useful and up-to-date version of the codes list in the packaging or to simply direct people to go to the Web site as a first step. Programming the remote is simple and very fast.
I also appreciate its slim-line profile and the light weight. And if you buy one of the versions in another finish than the standard basic black, it becomes more readily identifiable as you need to locate it. I have yet to try it for my Blu-Ray players, but it does seem to be lacking one-key access to some of the functionalities like time elasped or remaining; I would probably need to go into menus to use them with this remote. But that is a minor point and I consider myself fully satisfied.
Works great for the price. You lose out on a couple controls (like high speed scrubbing on the Apple TV) but otherwise it’s a great little all in one unit.
I got it yesterday and connected it to 4 devices: Sharp Roku TV, Sony sound bar, Apple TV, and Videotron cable box.
Codes were easily found for each device. The sound master feature is useful (volume going to the same device whatever device is selected).
Some drawbacks: First, the Sony sound bar input button is not as convenient (replaces +/-), you can only scroll in one direction. Also, it is minimalist, therefore, you stil need to explain “inputs”, device selection, and what to power off/on to other members of the family. There is no concept of « activity » that competitor product offer that make this easier, at 6x higher price. And like any universal remote, takes a while to get used to the locatin of the commonly used buttons.
So its main advantage for me is to only have one remote on the table, not 4.

The remote control controls all their routinely used features well and simply, with one significant exception. Yamaha is infamous for making devices that will only fully work with Yamaha remote controls. I can manage nearly all the routine features of the home theater amplifier (volume up/down/mute, source select, processing mode) with the universal remote control, but the universal will not turn it on - so I keep the old remote near the sofa primarily to turn it on. Other than that, everything is great.
There is an easy-to-set-up feature which will always send volume up/down keypresses to the audio device ONLY. This is an aggravation saver for me, because if I send the volume up/down commands to the TV (which sends audio not to its own speakers, but only to the sound bar with an SPDIF fiber cable), the TV raises an annoying notice that it cannot honor the volume control function. With the send volume changes only to audio device feature on, the volume commands go only to the Onkyo sound bar, and the annoying notices on the TV never come up.
I love the lighted keyboard in the dark.
It did take me a while to figure out how to get setup to work. You have to hold the setup button down for 3 full counts for it to light the on/off button up to show that the remote has entered setup mode. Despite being technically very capable, it was my own fault for not carefully reading the instructions. Once I figured this out, I was able to quickly get everything working.
In the code list, the setup codes for each brand of a particular device type are ordered so that popular devices are listed first, shortening one's search for the right code.
Although I can get to all the TV, Roku, and Blu-ray programming and setup menus with the universal remote, I still keep my old remotes in a drawer for a few specialized functions, especially all the oddball settings and modes in the sound bar and home theater.
Overall, this is a great experience, and a much better one than previous attempts to use so-called universal remotes - I had near about sworn myself off of them forever about 15 years ago as they were universally not universal. These new universal remotes are an example of actual human technological progress and make me proud to work in a product engineering team.
Pros

I recently purchased an identical replacement remote for my Roku Express to the one I have in my bedroom, because I wanted a remote that would at least operate the Roku and the TV together, just like like the one I purchased for my bedroom. I even purchased it from the exact same listing here on Amazon as the first one. Unfortunately, the manufacturer changed how that remote is made and it doesn't work with my living room TV like the remote for the bedroom TV does. I followed all the directions and even reached out to their customer service department (no response). It just wouldn't work. Then I noticed the model number had changed on that remote - there was the answer. Waste of money to buy that, I guess!
So, I started searching for something that was a true all-in-one universal remote that would operate everything I have set up - my Roku Express, the Sony TV and the Funai DVD/VCR (I still have this device because there are movies I enjoy that are out of print and I'm in the process of transferring them from VHS to DVD). I found this remote, and not only was it cheaper, but it was a breeze to set up and works wonderfully well!
1) Setup:
This thing was incredibly easy to set up. It took me all of about 7 minutes to pair it up to the TV, Roku and DVD/VCR unit, and I've got room on the remote for a couple more devices if I ever need to do that.
2) Ease of Use:
Works like a charm! Because it's a universal remote, you just have to remember to press the button corresponding to the device you want to control - so TV for the TV, DVD for the VCR/DVD unit and AUX for the Roku. Easy! This remote even has the little "house" or "home" button for the Roku - you can use that or the Menu button, both do the same thing.
3) Size/Weight:
This remote is stylish and lightweight - it's less than half the weight of my Roku remote. Plus, it's not as small as the Roku remote, which means there's less chance of losing it. It's slim and has a brushed aluminum-looking face plate, so dust won't show as much as on a black remote (a petty annoyance, I know, but...)
All in all, I'm very pleased with this remote and happy I purchased it. It was half the price of the replacement Roku remote I purchased.
UPDATE: 1 month followup. Remote is still working well, no problems. So far, none of the problems I'm seeing others report (losing sync with devices, having to re-input codes, only working part of the time). Mine works consistently well, no problems.
