Wrist-based Heart Rate
vívosmart HR smart activity tracker¹ with Elevate heart rate technology1 measures heart rate at the wrist 24/7. That gives you the freedom to work out with no additional heart rate strap needed. Using heart rate, vívosmart HR provides calories burned information and quantifies the intensity of your fitness activities, providing better credit for your efforts. You can even use your vívosmart HR as a heart rate strap on your wrist when paired with other compatible Garmin devices.
With Move IQ, you don’t need to start or stop your activity timer when you start a new activity. vívosmart HR+ can automatically tell the difference between movements like walking, running, biking, swimming and even using an elliptical trainer. You can review all your daily activities on Garmin Connect.
More Than Just Steps
In addition to measuring steps, calories and distance, vívosmart HR measures floors climbed with its integrated barometric altimeter. Whether you’re going for a run or trying out a new gym class, it measures your activity intensity with intensity minutes. This feature lets you monitor your progress against activity goals recommended by health organisations.
Stay active and connected with vívosmart HR activity tracker. Each time you receive a notification from your compatible smartphone, it gently vibrates and automatically displays the information. Simply touch and swipe the screen to read more. Other connected features allow you to control music and your VIRB action camera (sold separately) or find your misplaced phone.
Beat Yesterday, Every Day
vívosmart HR learns your current activity level, then assigns an attainable daily step goal. As you meet your milestones, it will adjust your goal for the next day, gradually nudging you toward a healthier lifestyle. Throughout your day, it reminds you to stay active with a move bar and vibration alert if you’ve been inactive for 1 hour. Go for a short walk to reset the inactivity timer.
vívosmart HR activity tracker automatically syncs with your smartphone throughout the day to save your stats to our free online community. At Garmin Connect, you can save, plan and share your activity and beat yesterday in your daily step count. Connect with other users to challenge and compete. For detailed calorie tracking, you can create an account at MyFitnessPal and link it to your Garmin Connect account. This allows you to compare calories consumed to total calories burned, which vívosmart HR records throughout the day.

Positives: I like how it looks. It's not bulky or really sporty looking so I feel comfortable wearing it when I'm dressed up. I have a very small wrist and it fits well. I tried the Fitbit charge2 on prior to ordering the garmin and it was just too big. I'm 5'5" and around 130lbs and rather active and fit. As this is my first activity tracker I'm overall pleased with its function. It tracks my sleeping patterns well, it is quite accurate with tracking my heart rate and activity levels. Though I will say it's a bit chintzy on the stair calculation. I live in a split level home, and it will only give me credit if I go from the basement all the way to the top level for one set of stairs which is technically 3 sets of 7 stairs in our home.
I think garmin could make the app more user friendly and allow it to be more customized this would be a 5 star review. These are things that can easily be fixed if the company wants to.
After my last band stopped charging I decided to try out the new version of the Vivosmart. The screen is larger now and I can actually read it in full sunlight. The screen is always on, so it can function more like a regular watch. That has taken some getting use to, as I've had to restrain myself from double tapping it to see the time. It's a change I can live with though.
It does all the same things that the original did plus it now has a heart rate monitor built in and it can count the number of floors of stairs you've climbed. Both of those, like the step counter, are more useful as a relative guide than a definitive source of truth. According to the heard rate graph in the Connect app, I was dead for 10 minutes yesterday with a heart rate of 0. And that wasn't when I took it off to get in the shower. I know I have it on tight enough, its leaving an indent in my arm and doesn't move around. The stair climbing feature occasionally doesn't give you credit for stairs you've climbed. Though it does that feature by using a build in barometer, so I would assume changing weather conditions could potentially cause it some issues.
Just remember that it's just a tool to gauge your relative activity level and isn't something to exactly measure anything and you'll be fine. I like that it "gamifys" activity, which I find helps to motivate me. Your mileage may vary.
It is a little more bulky than the previous version. But compared to my old Timex digital watch, it's not really that big.
Overall I'm happy with it so far. I will probably upgrade to the Vivoactive HR GPS at some point so I can track my cycling and skiing in one device instead of having to rely on my phone for GPS tracking. That's not a knock on the Vivosmart, it does it's job just fine.
