The book seemed to drag on. The flashback parts were fine, but the present day stuff seemed to be just filler. Too often, the author would write whole chapters about the characters going on patrols where nothing actually happened, that sort of thing.

The other thing that really started to annoy me is Traviss' insistence on making her pet character seem so important. Apparently every single person on the face of the planet is in awe of Bernie Mataki, and apparently every single person feels the need to bring up Mataki in reference to something they've seen or done. Traviss has all these great characters from the Gears universe to work with, and she still finds it necessary to make her's so central to the plot.

Another minor issue I had was with the terms she used. The characters from the games all spoke with American accents. They used American lingo and jargon. Yet Traviss had a lot of them talk like Brits. "Mates" isn't a term North Americans really use to refer to friends or comrades. Yet Traviss had characters from the games talking as though they just stepped off of Coronation Street.

If you're a Gears fan, I'd recommend the novels just because it does flesh out the backstory. But otherwise I'd recommend to stay clear. They're not very entertaining novels if you aren't a diehard Gears of War fan.

This book focuses more about Hoffman's involvement and how is it that he's so great. I loved this book, I imagined Anvil Gate a lot bigger than what the game drew it but oh well..

Great great book !!

This story continues Traviss' deepening of all the Gears of War characters. It is essential reading continuing the story between Gears 2 and 3.
