Product Description

Product Description

It’s the Sixties and Alan Stoddart - Stoddy to his friends - has a big problem. His life as a college student in London is suddenly transformed when the captivating free spirit Helena falls in love with him. But their future together is threatened when they’re caught up in the Paris riots and General Strike of May 1968, with little money and no means of escape… The German Girl is a wryly comical, sometimes poignant and ultimately life-affirming tale of student life in the turbulent late 1960s, set against the backdrop of London, Paris and Cambridge. The novel tells the story of an enduring love that neither revolutionary turmoil nor separation can erase.

The author, Dennis Wood is a professor of French literature and taught in Paris in 1967-8.

HASH(0x9bbf2c18) out of 5 stars A fascinating look at 1960's Paris Aug. 22 2013

We meet Stoddy and Cosima and Helena, and oh so many other wonderfully fleshed out characters with all their quirks and foibles going though University in Paris. The author is very detailed in his descriptions and you almost feel like you are actually there. This is a look at the daily life of students in another country during the tumultuous '60s and '70's. We follow the main character, Stoddy through his love life from mid 1960 through the 1990's. I found it to be an enjoyable read that gave me insight into the education system of another country and how they handled the turbulent era's. Quite fascinating.
HASH(0x9be129c0) out of 5 stars Why the title? Oct. 15 2013

I am not sure I understand the title but then I couldn't finish it anyway. Parts were interesting and
entertaining, and being part of that generation, also a trip down memory lane. But it was also boring after a while,
and even though I want to eventually read it again and hopefully finish it, this was not the time.
