For sixteen year old Mattie Hathaway, this is her normal everyday routine. She’s been able to see ghosts since her mother tried to murder her when she was five years old. No way does she want anyone to know she can talk to spooks. Being a foster kid is hard enough without being labeled a freak too.

Normally, she just ignores the ghosts and they go away. That is until she see’s the ghost of her foster sister… Sally.

Everyone thinks Sally’s just another runaway, but Mattie knows the truth—she’s dead. Murdered. Mattie feels like she has to help Sally, but she can’t do it alone. Against her better judgment, she teams up with a young policeman, Officer Dan, and together they set out to discover the real truth behind Sally’s disappearance.

Only to find out she’s dealing with a much bigger problem, a serial killer, and she may be the next victim…

Will Mattie be able to find out the truth before the killer finds her?

For the most part, this book is a fun read, which also has the power to scare the reader. Sadly, it lost its power near the end, becoming plain silly in places. Ultimately I was disappointed that it seemed exactly like the former TV series, Ghost Whisperer.

Pretty good story--writing, not so much. This would be good for a younger reader who can identify with a very self-centred teenager. Mattie is in foster-care and has major trust issues (we are beaned over the head with this in a rather constant fashion.). The word trust is so greatly over-used in this book that I decided to count. On page 185 alone it is used (in various forms) TEN times. Oh, and everyone has the hots for young Mattie. This could have been a five star book if the main character had been a little more likeable. And it wasn't because she is strong-willed and can take care of herself, it is because she just keeps telling us over and over and over just how strong and self-sufficient she is--and that she has, yes, you guessed it, TRUST issues. I get that someone in her position might have a problem letting people in.

There is a lot of text filler to pad this book. The writing goes off on a 5 (I counted!) page tangent with a silly escape from a boa-constrictor. WTFudgepops?

Add that the book is written in present tense (I don't normally read present tense books, but the premise looked good on this one. The premise is indeed good, but I think this will be the only Ghost Files book I will be reading.

"Ghost Files" a spooky thrill- ride begins when sixteen year old Mattie Hathaway a foster kid after her drug- addicted mother tries to murder her at five years of age, sees the apparition of her foster sister Sally at a party she's attending with her boyfriend Jake Owens. Bound, gagged and with a bullet hole in her head, Mattie knows that Sally's been murdered even though the police report has her disappearance classified as a runaway. Mattie with the help of rookie policeman Officer Dan Richards is determined to uncover the truth behind the disappearance only to discover that she could be the next victim of a serial killer.

Apryl Baker sets the stage with Mattie Hathaway a teen who winds up in foster care after her heroin addicted mother tries to kill her. Abused in some of the foster homes where she`s stayed, Mattie has quickly learns not only to defend herself and keep people at arm's length, but to ignore the bloody apparitions looking for help. Cleverly the author touches on the dangers that lie in some foster care homes as well the damage a drug addicted parent can inflict on a child in a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The plot heats up when Mattie is visited by the bloody ghost of her foster sister Sally who's believed to be a runaway after the police's slipshod investigation of her disappearance. Suspecting that the ghosts of several murdered children who harass her are connected to the same crime, Mattie and Officer Dan are swept up in a search for the truth and she realizes that she can be hurt by the dark anger of Shades; discovers a pathway to the In-Between; and is wrapped up in the deadly coils of a boa constrictor.

the main character, Mattie, is a 16 year old girl whose mother tried to kill her when she was very young, and since then, she has been able to see ghosts. The story is told through her eyes. When I read the first few pages, I wondered if it was written for a young adult audience only. But, Mattie is such an exceptional character, with a strong personality, that I cared what happened to her and her friends.

The detail and descriptions of what Mattie feels and sees are vivid that one can easily feel and imagine what she is experiencing.

I liked this book very much. It is the first in a series, but, can also be a stand alone novel. I appreciated that there were no profanities.

I expected this book to be typical teen paranormal romance, amusing, easy to read and mildly interesting while waiting for a Dr appt. Boy was I wrong!
I nearly missed my appointment because I didn't want to put it down long enough to walk to his office. The characters are interesting, fun and believable. And the set-up is brilliant.
I got this one free, but bought the next two before I was finished. And am waiting eagerly for the fourth.

I loved The Ghost Files! I was a little worried to start it as I don't read "scary" books so much anymore, but I loved it! It was just the right amount of scare level for me.....though I did have to keep the lights on while reading it :) I highly recommend this book!!! Starting book 2 now :)
