Product description
GL.iNet6416 is a mini travel router for working professionals and a programmable gateway for DIY hobbyists.
Larger Storage and Extendibility:
The router is with storages of 64MB RAM and 16MB Nand Flash, which can be further extended using external USB sticks. There are 2 Ethernet ports, 1 UART, and 5 GPIOs available for hardware DIY. It is an ideal portable gateway for IoT development.
WiFi Converter:
WiFi is extremely popular but still may not be available at anywhere. If you are still using a wired network at hotels or cafes, this mini router is able to convert it to a wireless network for sharing the WiFi with all your devices.
Even in places like cafes or restaurants with WiFi, it is not good to expose your devices to the public network directly. This router converts a public WiFi to your own WiFi with a firewall and then works as an agent for securer surfing. The agent connects all your devices when switching to a new WiFi. You don't have to input password for each of your devices.
The router is also able to convert your phone tethering, or 3G/4G USB modems into a private Wi-Fi.
Portable Travel Mate:
The router is lightweight, pocket friendly, and portable. It can be plugged into any laptops, power banks, or 5V DC adapters for power supply.
Open Source and Programmable:
OpenWRT is pre-installed and backed with a repository of 4000+ software packages. DDWrt is supported. Pre-installed with an OpenVPN client, it works with 20+ VPN service providers. Tor firmware is available for download. The firmware is under active development and can be updated online with one click.

It has worked really well for it's first trip which was a few weeks abroad in about 10 different hotels and apartments. The Wireless N 150 speed isn't particularly quick, but neither is hotel wifi, and it hasn't been a bottleneck. Once connected to the router's web interface it let me upgrade the firmware, and the new version at least even allows you to override the clients' DNS settings and use a preconfigured Cloudflare DNS or your own for added security. A configuration option allowed me to set up a VPN client which along with my VPN subscription allowed me to connect all devices through a UK server and get the English pages for websites, and lets you turn this functionality on and off using the configurable function switch at the side of the device. The router handled the various hotels' wifi captive portals fine, with the added benefit that you only need to click "accept" once and all devices can then use the wifi. In addition to the pretty fully featured default firmware you can also access the underlying OpenWRT LUCI interface and do some more advanced configuration if you want to, and replace the stock firmware with vanilla OpenWRT/DD-WRT, although I haven't felt the need myself.
So in summary this little device has been a revelation. I wish that GL.inet made non-travel routers as the custom skin on OpenWRT solution they use is far superior to most consumer wifi firmware I've used, and basically the only downside of this device I can see is that wifi N 150 is a bit outdated nowadays. I'd definitely recommend this device as a travel router if you are comfortable using a web interface to configure it, and to be honest you could probably get away with using it as a home router should you be so inclined. Recommended.
It was all working great Until. yes a software update. Now the automatic scan and reconnect has stopped working. The settings will work when manually triggered, just not automatically. A real pain as the hot stop checks us off every few hours.
Later update - found a fix for the auto scan issue on google, now working great again, so added another star.
Still working great after two years.
I have it running off a solar panel in the shed, used as a repeater to get WiFi to the bottom of the garden for a WiFi camera. I wish I had done this before.
Fairly easy to setup and I think the range is greater than my router!
It's not the fastest, but fine for my needs.
Also could do with the ability to remote restart the WiFi, you can turn it off, but then you need to physical go to the device to enable it.

I don't use all of its features such as VPN, or in a domestic setting using the LAN Ethernet connections, but for my mobile use it does exactly what is says on the can. Very good value for money and really tiny for mobile use with a laptop or creating your own secure network.
I've now purchased 2 of these devices, no least because they is considered "ideal hardware" for LEDE as they have over 4M flash and over 32M RAM. Quite honestly I find it difficult to fault. It comes supplied with GLs modified OpenWRT distribution, which in itself is feature-full and user-friendly. For my intended purpose though, I wanted to give dumb WiFi access around the building. I achieved this by installing vanilla OpenWRT and then disabled the DHCP server.
It's never let me down, easily more reliable than ISP supplied WiFi.
