HASH(0x9d198180) out of 5 stars Globe Trekker - Tahiti & Samoa March 23 2007

The DVD captured most of the exquisitness of Tahiti & Samoa. Ian is a very entertaining trekker. I had hoped to see a little bit more of French Polynesia, such as the Marquesas Islands, but overall it was an exceptional program.

I purchased this program before my trip to French Polynesia. It does a good job of giving an overview of the islands and its people. But honestly, no video can do French Polynesia justice.

HASH(0x9ab8ee1c) out of 5 stars Great DVD of Tahiti and Samoa! June 10 2011

I loved this DVD. It is so hard to find anything on Tahiti that is worth buying. The shots of Bora Bora are amazing. And this DVD is funny. I loved the part where the actor pretended to skip out on the bill at the hotel after the bill was $600 instead of $60. There is also a funny part about the bus driver in Samoa who stops the bus and makes all the passengers wait while he gets an ice cream! I am going to try the England Globe Trekker DVD next. I hope it is the same quality as this one because unlike Tahiti, I can actually afford to go to England. In short- Great Buy!

HASH(0x9a04d030) out of 5 stars Deeply disappointed April 22 2012

Based on reviews, I was dying to get this video. It was extremely disappointing. If you like the personality of Ian Wright and have only a passing interest in Tahiti and/or Samoa, you might like this. If you want to see the sights and/or learn about these islands, there is little here. I like Wright just fine - he can be funny, and he's affable enough, though some may find him insufferable in a Jerry Lewis sort of way. It's the concept that is poor. There is some good if passing information on Robert Louis Stevenson and Gaugin, but the latter is more concerned with showing Mr. Wright vamping as a Tahitian woman than anything else. Har de har. Good bit on tatooing, Mr. Tahiti contest, climbing a mountain, and decent bits on food and stingray feeding. Here I don't mind Wright's campiness because the scenes are otherwise well done. What are missing are nice shots of the islands, general tourism information, history, and just about anything else you might be interested in. There are several lame interviews with vacationers - nice people, but they have nothing to say. An elderly couple backpacking for 7 months are quite interesting, but alas, they are not the hosts. With few exceptions, the local inhabitants (who surely have better stories to tell than Mr. Wright) are completely mum, though they are photographed throughout. Truly, there is little here for old people, young people, honeymooners, pilgrims, etc. It's just a quirky, aimless adventure for a self-absorbed, mildly talented host. To give an example, the show starts as he reaches Bora Bora for reasons unknown, and inspects his over-water bungalow. He practically drools over it, growls and oo-la-las over the romantic implications - but he is a single traveler. It makes no sense at all, and only serves to degrade the production from the get-go. There is exactly one nice shot of the Bora Bora mountains, as seen from the Pearl Resort. Otherwise the camera is eternally pointed outward from the island. Wright sits in a hut on a motu (islet) dreaming of some unspecified paradise, cavorting in the water and then pretending to have forgotten to pack the essentials of survival. With some exceptions noted above, that's what this 1 hour film is: a lame joke.
HASH(0x9a18e834) out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, a good "trip" Dec 7 2009

We borrowed this as a VHS from library and loved it so we were glad to find it offered on DVD now. A really fun trip, we laughed at Mr. Wright's antics. He meets people so well wherever he goes and children seem to love him as he plays with them. The sting rays were awesome - "kissing" a sting ray - wow! We will watch this one again and again so are happy to add it to our collection.
