Product description

From Booklist

Besides The Goon 's supporting cast of aliens, creature-people, and zombies, the spirit of Frank Miller's notorious Sin City hovers around Powell's crime-sf-horror concoction. The Goon 's city is as evil, its violence is as over the top, its baddies are as annoyingly self-resurrecting, and its characters look as grotesque as their counterparts in Miller's creation. But while Sin City is profoundly creepy, and liking it is partly a matter of soul-searching as to why it's so alluring, The Goon is wildly funny, a Bronx cheer in the face of the genre conventions it mercilessly rags. Here, in addition to the usual targets, Powell lampoons the football melodrama, the hellhole-prison drama, sf parallel-world high jinks, and A Christmas Carol. He rivals the great early MAD in uniting goofy writing and goofy drawing, as if he were Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Davis in one body. And his talent is at least half-contagious, as the concluding story written in Franky's voice by Lennon, to which Powell contributes just eight illustrations, hilariously demonstrates. Ray Olson
