"Medders has given us a devotional book that is fresh, biblical, and very funny. . . . Read this book, savor this gospel, and then get off your couch and take some dominion in the name of Jesus."--Owen Strachan, professor of theology and church history"Boyce College" (06/23/2014)

"If the gospel has become something routine to you, not the kind of good news that lights up a Galilean sky with angels, read this book with expectation. J. A. Medders . . . can shake you out of routine and toward glory."--Russell D. Moore, President"Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission" (06/23/2014)

Product Description

Christianity is based on the foundation of the good news of the gospel. Yet how many Christians truly find their identity there? How many are thriving in a community clinging to the gospel? How many forget about the wondrous glory of Jesus? J. A. Medders is on a mission to help Christians remember that the power that raised Jesus from the dead is also the power for our everyday life in Christ. Yet living a gospel-centered life does not always come easily. The biblical meditations in Gospel Formed help to kindle, or rekindle, the passion to live a grace-addicted, truth-filled, Jesus-exalting life by constantly driving the reader back to the power of the cross and the empty tomb. Funny, punchy, and theologically accessible, readers will be encouraged, challenged, and ultimately reoriented to the true North of Christianity—Christ Himself.

HASH(0xa6bdfef4) out of 5 stars Read this book and enjoy Jesus! Dec 17 2014

Everybody needs the Gospel. In this book, Jeff, sets out to show us through Scripture that the Gospel is the good news that saves us and the good news that sanctifies us. We need to hear this message on a daily basis. Over and over again, this book does an excellent job of pointing us to the awesomeness of Jesus as seen in the Gospel.
The book is broken up into 5 main parts:
1. The Gospel Starting Block
2. What is Gospel Worship?
3. What is Gospel Identity?
4. What is Gospel Community?
5. What is Gospel Mission?
Jeff did an outstanding job tackling what the Gospel is and how it shapes our worship, our identity, our community, and our mission.
This book was a blast to read! Not only was it saturated from cover to cover with the Gospel, it was written so dynamically that I can’t wait to read it again. Gospel Formed is filled with good humor and great theology. This is an excellent primer on the Gospel.
Go read this book and enjoy Jesus!

HASH(0xa6c5915c) out of 5 stars THOUGHT PROVOKING! Jan. 16 2015
By Moonpie - Published on
Format: Paperback
When I started reading this book, I must confess my expectations were not the greatest. I assumed it would to be dry and boring, unable to really teach me anything didn’t already know. I am happy to say that was not the case! I found it interesting, entertaining and enlightening. No there wasn’t any new information I have not studied or heard of before, but I understand now that teaching me something new was not the author’s goal. He wanted share the things I already knew but to see them in a different light.
The book is an easy read and the chapters are only a few pages each. However he got right to the heart of the matter in those few pages. The book centers on making the main thing, the main thing, and that is the Gospel which is also Christ. You can’t separate the two, yet somehow we do. The Gospel should be the hub of the wheel of our lives and everything else should radiate from it. That includes all things: emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally. Somehow as we travel through time we have a tendency to make one or more spokes of our “wheel” the hub.
We can become so familiar (and not in a good way) with being a Christian, our relationship with God and what His Word says that we unknowingly become detached and complacent. We “know” It, but is it a living, breathing, all-encompassing part of our daily existence? I believe most people would have to say “no”. This book encourages us to take a fresh look at Gospel until it becomes what the Lord intended it to be, the center of our being.
I loved Mr. Medder’s humor and his anecdotes were spot on! I also appreciated the many scripture references to look up and further my study. His direct questions were undeniably probing, causing me to look inward. He certainly encouraged me to take a closer look at myself and gave me the desire to make the Gospel the focus of every aspect and every moment!
I received this book free from Kregel Publications. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

HASH(0xa6c5939c) out of 5 stars Boomerang effect - it comes back to us Dec 9 2014
By Book Reviewer - Published on
Format: Paperback
The Gospel is similar to a boomerang. In fact, the gospel has a boomerang effect on our lives. It truly just keeps coming back to us.

This book is faithful, funny and fresh.

This book is a like a sponge saturated in the gospel. It is filled with gospel gems and ongoing truths that will shake the dust off of your faith and renew your senses to the glory of the truth of the good news. This book is faithful to the gospel. It does not run away from it at all, but rather runs toward it, seeking it deeper and deeper.

This book is funny. The author uses quite a few analogies and classic one-liners that catch you off-guard and help you stay in wonder. Most often, people don't mix humor with the gospel, but Medders does it in such a way that deems it appropriate to do so. Please note, this book isn't hilarious...this isn't a comedy script. But there are little anecdotes along the way that are placed just at the proper time.

This book is fresh. When a jeweler examines a classic diamond, they often continue to examine it days upon days but there are shimmers and shines that protrude forth the more you look at it. This book has those shimmers and shines of the gospel.

You may not agree with every stance or ideology of the author and that is ok. I also did not. His presentation of the Lord's Supper being a party and celebration that is often portrayed as boring and quiet is a bit of a stretch for me.

The only knock on the book is that it is repetitive, which is good, because we need gospel reminders! However, there are great analogies and not go great analogies in the book. Just because we often have great thoughts, does not mean we automatically get "on a roll" and every idea that comes forth is worth nothing.

All that to say, this book is still faithful, funny and fresh and might be exactly what you need to lift you from rut and routine.

Review Title: Live in Christ, Him in You (review of Gospel Formed by J. A. Medders)
Reviewer: Janice S. Garey
***** 5 Stars

This book does an important service by explaining how to do life as the subtitle indicates: Living a Grace-Addicted, Truth-Filled, Jesus-Exalting Life. The author uses easy to understand expressions and infuses his writing with his American cultural awareness to engage the reader. Most chapters are short and designed for reading one per day.

As I read, I had a number of aha! moments. My eyes opened to a more positive and joyful understanding of some Scriptures. The pure focus on Jesus in the book gives great refreshment for those who may have gotten off on other tangents in their faith life.

The author relates how he went about busyness in the church for a number of years without really having it all centered on Jesus. He does not want others to be losing out on the main thing by getting sidelined on other things. This section will be helpful for those needing to reset their focus.

As an example of one aha! moment I experienced in my reading, the author explains how communion is a celebration and needs not be treated as a dreary event in church. Those receiving the bread and wine should be joyful for the new life in Christ. Remember Him in joy!

I also appreciated the author's writing about being missional in our own communities. We who have Christ in us are all evangelists. He explains that we need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to boldly share the gospel that we are reluctant to share in our own weakness.

This book contains so much more. I am thankful to the author, publisher, and for giving me the book in exchange for an honest review. I believe all Christians will be affected in a positive way by reading this book.
