He is on the cutting edge and can help change the way we practice medicine." --Mehmet Oz, MD
"Dr. Perlmutter takes us on a detailed tour of the destructive effects that 'healthy whole grains' have on our brains. Modern wheat, in particular, is responsible for destroying more brains in this country than all the strokes, car accidents, and head trauma combined. Dr. Perlmutter makes a persuasive case for this wheat-free approach to preserve brain health and functioning, or to begin the process of reversal." --William Davis, MD, author of Wheat Belly
"If you want to boost your brain power, keep your memory, and lift your mood and energy, as well as heal from a host of other common complaints, Dr. Perlmutter is your guide. This is the definitive instruction book for the care and feeding of your brain!" --Mark Hyman, MD, author of The Blood Sugar Solution
"Dementia and many other brain diseases are not inevitable, nor are they genetic. They are directly and powerfully linked to a diet high in sugar and grains. Grain Brain not only proves this, it also gives you everything you need to know to protect your brain--or a loved one's--now."--Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom
"This book is a treasure. It is filled with self-empowering wisdom and easily understood leading-edge science. It can help you to avoid the devastating effects of an unhealthy diet and the dietary factors which are involved. By learning from the information presented in Dr. Perlmutter's book, you can avoid multiple health and neurological problems."--Bernie Siegel, MD, author of Faith, Hope, and Healing and The Art of Healing
"A provocative, eye-opening scientific account of how diet profoundly influences nerve health and brain function. Grain Brain explains how the American diet rich in gluten and inflammatory foods is linked to neurological conditions. Dr. Perlmutter outlines a blueprint for optimal health and a more resilient brain through proper nutrition and lifestyle. Grain Brain is a must-read!"--Gerard E. Mullin, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and author of The Inside Tract: Your Good Gut Guide to Great Digestive Health
"Dr. Perlmutter is the leading integrative medicine neurologist in North America today. His ability to fully integrate conventional medicine diagnosis and treatment with the latest innovations in nutritional and environmental medicine is phenomenal. As a teacher and clinician, he has fundamentally changed how physicians and patients think about neurological degeneration and, happily, regeneration." --Joseph Pizzorno, MD, coauthor of Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine

You might wonder what a neurosurgeon is doing writing about nutrition, specifically about grain and linking it to the brain. I did too. I had already read Wheat Belly, by Dr. William Davis (see my review) and wondered what beyond the surprising revelations about wheat I could learn from Dr. Perlmutter. The answer is, plenty.
This book promotes a low carbohydrate eating regimen, not just to control obesity and diabetes ("diabesity") but to prevent brain shrinkage, which is associated with brain disorders and dementia. Calling it Type 3 diabetes, the author takes the position, supported by studies, that blood sugar spikes, even in the accepted normal range, can have severe implications for brain health. In fact, once carbs are under control, brain health can improve, restoring creativity, a sharper memory, higher energy levels and even a better sex life. Fat, not carbohydrate, is the preferred fuel of human metabolism.
This book is based on the latest science. The findings are absolutely remarkable and I was struck by how the tie-in with blood sugar spikes caused by a high carbohydrate diet and particularly grains, can actually cause brain shrinkage and a resulting spectrum of brain ailments. These include ADHD and Alzheimer's, among others. The book answered some questions for me about something that tragically happened to a member of my own family, something that could not have been explained years ago.
Brain ailments can be devastating to quality of life, not only for the patients, but for the families as well. It's comforting to know that there is now a way to mitigate the risks, that lifestyle can actually play a part in brain health. That in itself is a revelation. This is a fascinating and superbly written book that will keep you spellbound from cover to cover. Highly recommended.
In my never-ending quest to find healthier ways to eat without going on some strict fad diet, I had to give this book a try. For me, weight hasn’t been the only goal, but healthier living for mind and body. So, how could I not delve into a book which opens with provocative statements like, “Brain disease can be largely prevented through the choices you make in life”. Or “fruit and other carbohydrates could be health hazards with far-reaching consequences that not only will wreak physical havoc on your brain, but also will accelerate your body’s aging process from the inside out”. And this is just the beginning of numerous statements made by author Dr. David Perlmutter.
Happily, the doctor cites many studies from respected journals to back up his claims. It appears that the medical community is beginning to take a hard look at those low-fat, high-carb diets we’ve been conditioned to believe are good for us. Perlmutter also debunks some popular, though misguided beliefs, about cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs. Most of the scientific explanation behind his claims was reasonably easy to understand even for those of us without science backgrounds. The book is well written, well organized, and suggested menu plans and recipes will be really helpful. Given the dramatic rise in Alzheimer’s disease, Grain Brain is also a timely contribution to healthier living.
Honestly, no other book has really inspired me to change some unhealthy eating habits as much as this one has. It will be interesting to see how long his message sticks with me, but for anyone who wants to improve their health, this is a must-read.
