This is a dandy little set of tapes for the layperson with some familiarity with the series of books mentioned. All three volumes were originally broadcast on a Canadian radio show (This Morning) hosted by Enright, who questions his guest, Meyer, professor at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, about the "essential texts," those works that have, in Meyer's view, shaped Western thought and literature. Each text is given about ten minutes of very lively discussion, not at all pedantic or wordy, with many references to current events and personalities as they might relate to the particular title. The pace is almost too fast, and the host is sometimes annoyingly interruptive, but mostly the tapes are entertaining and thought-provoking and accessible. Books discussed include the Bible and selections from Sophocles, Homer, Dante, Milton, James Joyce, and, of course, Shakespeare. A good addition to most collections.AHarriet Edwards, East Meadow P.L., NY
