Mcqueen/Garner/Attenborough/Do ~ Great Escape
The Great Escape image of Steve McQueen (as "The Cooler King") astride his motorcycle has entered silver-screen iconography, alongside Brando on his bike from The Wild One. Based on a true story about a group of POWs who mount a daring breakout from a supposedly inescapable Nazi prison camp, this rousing and suspenseful WWII epic features an all-star cast, including James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, and David McCallum. The DVD also includes a 24-minute documentary about the making of the film. --Jim Emerson

This would have been a 5 star purchase if it wasn't for the laptop only use
this transfer is AMAZING!!! it is a real HIGH DEFINITION transfer and STUNNING is what they say on the case and its true! Many DVDs say digitally transfered....and often that just means they pulled it from a previously issued laserdisc via digital output...you have never seen this movie this pristine....EVER!
The remastered audio and video alone merit the purchase.
My problem is with the way they took a 50-minute long History Channel documentary from some years back and "re-packaged" it as 5 10-minute featurettes. All they did was run the end credits of each "featurette" (which were really the end credits for the documentary as a whole) at what would have been the commercial break on the History Channel broadcast. Then, at the return from the commercial break, they inserted a "brand new intro" to make it seem like we were gonna watch a new featurette.
I guess someone in the Marketing department thought that "5 Featurettes" would read as a stronger selling point than "featuring a 50-minute History Channel documentary."
I swear, Marketing people must think we are stupid.
The end result is almost the same, except of course you have to weed through a few extra minutes of the same credit sequence over and over and over if you want to plow through the entire documentary. It's just a little insulting, IMHO.
But the movie is fun, the "separating fact from fiction" parts are interesting without being derogatory, and we get to see Steve McQueen and James Garner near their peaks.
Great film. Buy it, but take the packaging promises with a grain of salt.
In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history and were brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn who worked on what, became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, 'The Great Escape' is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges [The Magnificent Seven], screenwriters James Clavell [Shogun] and W.R. Burnett [Little Caesar]. Furthermore, Elmer Bernstein's brilliant classic film score has rarely sounded better. Backed up by an interesting package of extra features, 'The Great Escape' Blu-ray is a fittingly strong disc for an excellent piece of cinema.

Adventure, Drama, History, 172 minutes
Directed by John Sturges
Starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough
The Great Escape runs almost three hours, but it's never boring. Don't think of it as a traditional war film as there are no battle scenes of any kind. This looks at how people dealt with captivity in a German POW camp. Although it's based on true events, there is far too much humor for us to take the story completely seriously.
It's meant as pure entertainment and features one of the strongest ensemble casts in movie history, featuring the likes of Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum, Nigel Stock and Gordon Jackson.
It's the duty of every officer to attempt to escape or force the enemy to deploy a ridiculous amount of resources to prevent escapes. The Allied airmen perform that task to their best of their abilities. We see seven people attempt escape in the opening 20 minutes, but these are clumsy efforts meant to test the enemy.
Once that is over, the commanding officers devise a more serious plan. This is a fascinating segment in which we are shown how every man has a part to play, according to his expertise. The group decides to begin three escape tunnels and has several men experienced in that area. While that sounds easy, it's a logistical nightmare. Wood is needed to prevent tunnels from collapsing, so the group takes planks from every possible source. The dirt has to be disposed of and presents another problem. If the escape succeeds, the prisoners will need clothes and documentation to evade capture. They will need to be able to pass as German or French.Read more ›

Entertaining as a movie, but so fantastically and factually distorted, it is a travesty that it should be allowed to share its title with that of a real event that actually took... Read morePublished 5 months ago by Stan
