Product Description

Review

“This book is required for all my classes. The more I use this book, the more I believe that unresolved grief is the major underlying issue in most people’s lives. It is the only work of its kind that I know of that outlines the problem and provides the solution.” (Bernard McGrane, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology, Chapman University)

This book helped me by bringing up memories I hadn't thought about in years,it turns out, because they had been disappointments I hadn't known how to deal with. I found myself crying while reading on more than one occasion. Although I felt rather depressed for a few days I realize it is because I had brought a lot of the past to the forefront in my mind. The book helped me realize how a marriage breakup after 32 years together, I thought happily, really weren't that happy after all, so I shouldn't have been blindsided when it was over. I really believe a breakup feels worse than a death and the book reaffirms that in some ways. Life will go on. There is a process. We can't hurry the process. We all make our mistakes during the process, but the healing will begin at some point. I cried a river for thirteen months. But now I have cried only once in the last three months. I'm not healed completely, but I'm on my way! Thank You!

I am even more impressed with the expanded edition than the wonderful edition that preceded it. As a bereavement counsellor, this has been invaluable for me, and for my suffering clients. I buy multiple copies, and give them to anyone who is experiencing the sadness of loss - recent loss, unresolved loss from the past, through death, divorce, growing up in a dysfunctional/alcoholic home. Best of all it is an easy read, with fascinating case studies and examples. Certainly the best of any literature that is out there in the area of grief recovery

This book is filled with eye, heart and mind-opening ideas about loss; and truths and tools when it comes to dealing with and processing loss. The definition of loss itself is a new idea. This book and the activities/exercises within it have changed my life and I liken the teachings of this book to "magic". My life loss timeline was a difficult yet amazingly liberating experience and my energy level has drastically increased since completing it. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE. I have even found some of the ideas and teachings of this book extremely helpful in parenting. I have realized that any type of change can be felt as a loss, especially in children. You must read this book; it has changed the way I think!

I got this book from the public library and set it aside because I didn't want to do the work involved to help me through my grief. I bought the book because I realized that I had not grieved previous losses in my life and needed to do so in order to be free.

The Grief Recovery Handbook is written for people that experienced a loss in their life or will experience a loss in the future. It is an easy read and the action steps to complete lost relationships are simple but very healing. Finally the myths of grieving are uncovered and new viewpoints examined. I recommend it for everyone that wants the right tools to heal his/her broken heart.

Many years ago, I read this book & attended the Grief Counseling certification workshop. At that time, I was only in my late 20's & had experienced 3 family losses & found this book to be a wonderful healing tool. The blessing has been felt many times throughout my life. Although I had become certified through this course many years ago, it was for my career. Now, nearly 20 years later, I have recently purchased the 20th Anniversary Edition & have realized that there are many losses that each of us face in life beyond death of loved ones. Even after all these years, and being exposed to a myriad of grief counseling materials, "The Grief Recovery Handbook" remains at the very top of recommended books in my mind. It does exactly what it says it does. Recently, I have experienced several losses in a very short period of time & found this book to be "the one" to truly heal my heart. Surprisingly, I learned from this newest Edition, that I also had some healing to do in the area of my health since I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes as an adult. I had never thought of the change in my health status as a loss & now I see exactly why I have been struggling with the daily challenges since I had not completed the loss of the change of my health. This book I feel could bless every home & person. We all face losses throughout this life.

I traveled to Phoenix in 1998 to train with John James. Since then as a coach and counselor I have helped hundreds find freedom from emotional pain using the techniques of the Grief Recovery Handbook. It is practical, meaningful and it works. Anyone will benefit from reading this book. We all have losses that keep us from being fully available to others. This handbook is a path to wholeness and freedom.

It is an excellent book to help you when you don't know how to finish the grieving process or you don't have any support to walk alongside you. This is an excellent resource for all kinds of loss (death, health, suicide, pet, move, job, financial, etc).
