It's bigger than I had expected. I was toying with the idea of getting the next larger model, and this is more than adequate for my jointer not to mention 120v vs 240v. It's size and weight made me even more concerned how best to mount given all of the forces that would be in play; and while I knew it would be a long shot, after I actually got it I completely rejected the idea of trying to somehow mount it to the existing jointer cabinet.
I did purchase the Steelex D3868 Quick Holder for W1764/W1765 Power Feeders mount to see if I could use it but after several attempts I could find no way to incorporate it and have confidence in the final install. I finally decided to rip down, joint and glue together (3) 2x6s to end up with a post that is roughly 4 1/4 x 5 and just tall enough to reach just shy of the bottom of the jointer outfeed table surface. I then wrapped the bottom of the post in jointed 2x6s to add footprint to the post. My jointer is on a wood platform to raise it up and make it easier to work on, so I pocket screwed the bottom of the post to the jointer platform and I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the outfeed table to secure it (with a 1 1/2" #8 screw) on the top of the post.
I thought I might have to put leveling feet on the bottom of the post, but with the feeder mounted on the post and all of the weight carried to the floor is sits perfectly and is absolutely rock solid. There is a fair amount of lateral force that this feeder exerts on the mount, particularly depending how far the feeder is extended from the mount. I used 2 1/2 lag screws to secure the mount to the post. I may have over-engineered it a bit, but with all of the forces in play, I figured more is better. I'm very happy with the final result.
The feeder's installed gears provide for a fairly fast rate of feed; I certainly wouldn't want it any faster. It did come with an additional set of gears which I assume will make it slower but have not played with it yet. I tested the final install with the hardest thing I had around - a scrap piece of 8" oak. The results were perfect - no sipe and no tear out from feeding too fast but I am going to look into slowing it down. From a production standpoint, I needed to lower the feeder after no more than 2 passes. It does require to be raised over the jointer fence and then rotated out of the way in order to joint free hand (which takes a bit of time); so I'll have to be fairly organized in how I use it for larger jobs.
In all, very satisfied with the results from both a quality and safety standpoint.
Proper setup is important, some people try to feed stock thru a saw that either doesn't have the HP to keep up the proper RPM or the blade is not
sharp enough to handle the feed rate. Read the Manual then test your setup to see how fast your saw can handle the boards. If your saw is only 1 1/2 HP
you need to feed slower. the additional gears is a lot of help here.
