Product Description

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–In this sequel to The Gruffalo (Dial, 1999), the wide-eyed daughter of that story's title character decides to find the "Big Bad Mouse" that her father has told her so much about. "His eyes are like pools of terrible fire,/and his terrible whiskers are tougher than wire." With her stick doll tucked under her arm, the youngster enters the deep, dark woods and follows marks in the snow to snake, owl, and fox. When she finally finds a little mouse, she grabs him for a feast, but the clever creature tricks her into running away to the comfort of her sleeping father's arms. The full-color cartoons portray a suitably sympathetic child in the snow-filled woods. While children may appreciate the details (the stick doll, snake tracks in the snow, gruffalo child's cave drawings) in the art, lack of change from picture to picture and in perspective diminish its effectiveness. The plot, rhymes, and art are all slightly weaker than the original tale. Purchase this where the first book is popular.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Delightful! It has something to offer to children of all ages, either because of the story or because of the meaning behind it. It speaks the child's language without being condescending. It offers suspense without being scary. The illustrations are rich and colourful, an excellent visual translation of the text.

Our 19 month old son has enjoyed several of Julia Donaldson's stories. From being very small the rhyming of the stories has soothed him and as he grew older the amazing illustrations have captivated him. We laughed aloud when we first read this sequel to the gruffalo, all of our favourite characters were back again along with the clever little mouse. I cannot recomed this or any other of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's books highly enough, we hope that the pair will be publishing more books soon.

We got this book because we bought the original and our son saw the "baby" gruffalo book and REALLY wanted it. Both our little boys (age 2 and 3.5) love the book, although we find that the big version of these books are favoured by the kids. The small size and durability is good for travel though.

Our toddler loved the gruffalo so much and this is a very sweet sequel. The wording is similar enough that she recognized that it was an extension of the same story.

I wish there was more in the series :)

A story that is told in rhyme, with sly humor and clear, lively illustrations. Note: it is best to have already read "The Gruffalo" to get the full enjoyment of this story.
