Jacobs approaches his story in a very engaging way and unlike too many authors, some of them well-known and best-selling, he puts in the effort to develop his characters. Even though the book starts and stays a fast mover, as we're racing along with a great story, he actually tells us something about the folks in the action. Without dragging, even a little bit, he gets us into the heads of his characters and gradually feeds us some insight into where they are and what they care about. Don't get me wrong; this isn't some contemplative, precious, inner motivational study - it's a good, fast-moving story with some science fiction and some spy-thriller to it too. If you like Tom Clancy (the early stuff - not the %*@# he's putting his name on these days) and if you like Michael Crichton, you'll like this guy Jacobs. He's got a bit of the best of Clancy and Crichton mixed up with some of his own field of expertise, which the cover says is medicine. I believe it. He sprinkles it in without getting all heavy handed about it. Very nice combination.
The underlying story is just excellent. Without giving anything away, it very quickly hooks you with an "event" and then follows up with the kind of response you hope even our central government would have planned out and waiting to execute.
My only complaint: The day the book arrived, I was up reading till about 2 am - on a week night!
Highly recommended .
