HASH(0xa4b806a8) out of 5 stars Beautiful French Baroque Nov. 21 2009

I bought this CD because I wanted to become more familiar with French Baroque, since mostly I hear Italian and German. The music sounds lovely on period instruments and inspires me to explore these composers and other French composers more thoroughly. I thought the price ridiculously low for a Nicholas Harnoncourt CD. A great bargain for some splendid music.
HASH(0xa4f357c8) out of 5 stars Early Harnocourt performances - now available in new bargain download package from the Bach Guild March 12 2016
By Phil (not) in Mågnoliá - Published on Amazon.com
The performances here from this 1963 recording Musik am Hofe Ludwig XIV; Music at the court of Louis XIV: 51 minutes of works by Marais, Couperin and Hotteterre Conceptus Musicus, originally released on LP Amadeo (1963), subsequently on LP Vanguard VCS 10029.

These (in part) have now been released by the Bach Guild as part of a download package available here on Amazon that brings together the complete Bach Guild (i.e. Vanguard) recordings from 1952-1965 of cellist and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, leading the Concentus Musicus Wien that he had co-founded (along with wife, violinist Alice Harnoncourt). In fact, according to wikipedia, the Concentus Musicus Wien was first founded in 1953, the year Nikolaus married Alice, and only gave their first public concert in 1957 (I believe that it had not been christened with the name Concentus Musicus Wien until that time), so I can't explain the 1952 date.

These early recordings by Harnoncourt are generally considered the beginnings of the period instrument movement. From the biography on the really excellent website (www dot harnoncourt dot info), "Nikolaus Harnoncourt collected historical instruments and, in addition to his performing and conducting activities, devoted his time to his philosophical analyses of “Musik als Klangrede” (“music as speech”), which have to date remained the seminal works on the performance of early music, the key to an entire universe of forgotten works and musical experiences buried under the sands of time.":
