This is written to be done either as a men-only group, or as a couples study, since there are sections for wives/mothers, even though it is definitely geared toward husbands/fathers. I would certainly recommend this to any father that either wants to get into the game of being a real father, perhaps like the one he never had himself, or for the dad that is in the game (rather than on the sidelines) but wants to take it to the next level (or two, or three, even!) The material is Biblically/doctrinally sound, and certainly not given to modern psychology, or any of the other warped perspectives on manhood/fatherhood that we see around us these days. A breath of fresh air and life in the stale, sick marketplace of "men's" stuff that is being put out by the secular media. This is unabashedly Christ-centered and Bible-centered, pulls no punches, and gets right down to the practical stuff of where we actually live, rather than talking in flowery, academic (and dangerously misleading) drivel that so often characterizes the secular media today. I can't say enough positive things about this content!!
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because each session tries to cover a great deal of material, and asks several tough, though-provoking questions in each study. It's designed to be done in as few as 8 sessions, although, if you only plan an hour for each discussion, you will leave feeling like you barely got started and never really finished going through the material because there is so much good stuff here. After working through several of the lessons, my recommendation for the discussion format is to allow about 1½ to 2hrs for each discussion session IF you are going to try to get through the material in 8 sessions. Otherwise, break it up a little more and plan for up to 16 sessions. An alternative that may work really well would be to do 8 discussion sessions, meeting every other week, so that you have 2 weeks to work through a lesson. I'm actually going to try this last option later this year with a few other men, as my work shedule (and theirs) would lend itself to the every-other-week format much better than a weekly one.
