But yes, beautifully rendered game assets for art, and more minutia-detail on everything you never knew and most casual gamers would never care to know about Halo. I absolutely love material like this, the fleshing out of history in a fictional universe. If you're like me, you admired the game for the scope, the majesty, and the intrigue of the Halo realm, and the game-play mechanics were a paltry second. This book was made for geeks like us.
The cover says "The Definitive Guide to the Halo Universe", what it should really say is "A Collection of all the Information We've Already Published Somewhere Else and a Bit More". There is very little new information in this book, so if you were expecting to have all your questions answered this isn't the book for you. Take the Spartan II section of the book for example, of the 75 Spartans we are only given the names of 26, this simply isn't satisfactory for an encyclopedia. At the very least the names of all 75 Spartans should be included, those that haven't been given names should have for this book. The same sort of issue comes up in the AI section, the visual personality (appearance) of the AI Melissa is listed as "Unknown. There is no possible reason that the appearance of an AI enlisted to a UNSC starship would be unknown. The problem seems to be an unwillingness to create new "canon" material, if something wasn't mentioned in a previous literary project it's simply listed as unknown in this encyclopedia. There are also alleged outright mistakes, one I can confirm is the claim that a Brute Honour Guard killed Miranda Keyes, whereas we all saw the Prophet of Truth holding a Brute Spiker after her death during a Halo 3 cutscene.
That covers the bad, so lets move on to the good. The pages are nice and thick in full colour with tons of pictures that cover every square centimeter of page space, DK didn't skimp in any way when it came to the visuals.Read more ›

While lacking detailed Precursor and Forerunner History, it is still full of excellent artwork and a depth of Covenant-Human History. Read morePublished on April 9 2013 by David Meldrum
