This is a thought provoking book and the story is heartbreaking. The family is caught in an impossible position as they struggle to make moral, ethical, legal and emotional decisions which will profoundly effect not only themselves but also their friends and extended family both in the short term and in the future. I worked with children who were born with severe medical issues and witnessed the families struggle with life altering decisions. I almost found this book to sad to read.

This story is about so many issues, adoption, abortion, the impact of family members health and financial pressure on marriage and friendships. Told in the authors usual manner of chapter by chapter a different characters story and take on the situation. A thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating read and informative about Osteogenesis Imperfecta, OI where infants bones break, even in the womb.

This is a very moving story well told and completely involving. It had me engrossed from the start. I had to force myself to put it down in order to get on with the chores of daily life. This is an emotional ride with surprises here and there.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story of a family with a differently-abled daughter, I found the book very touching, very thought-provoking. It is the type of book which you read, finish, put down & then think about for a long time before you can begin to read another book. Well done!

After hearing good things about her, I read my first Picoult book. She doesn't disappoint. I loved it! "Handle With Care" is written so you move through a great plot line from different, well developed POVs, so you really get to know the characters. And she grabs your attention and desire to read on right from the get go. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

What in the heck just happened? As someone who has read the majority of Picoult's novels, I was very interested throughout the entire story. And then all of a sudden I turned the page and the book was finished? What?! I literally looked around, mouth agape.

Not her best work though she is a master at moral dilemmas and this had quite a twist to it. I get tired of the anger between the characters and the "poor me" aspect of looking after a handicapped child. I've not experienced that with people I know who sacrifice much for their children with grace and even joy.

Same old same old

Jodi Picoult writes very successful 'best-sellers' but reading 'Handle With Care', I couldn't help but think I'd read it all before. The plot - family with sick daughter gets into big ethical courtroom drama - is straight out of 'My Sister's Keeper' and the multi-voiced multi-point of view narrative is straight out of lots of her books.
In this case the family have a daughter with a severe bone deformity called Osteogenesis Imperfecta and the legal case revolves around whether the doctor who did her mid-pregnancy ultrasound scan should have known that something was wrong and could have advised the parents early enough for them to choose to abort the foetus. The twist is that the aforementioned doctor is the mother's best friend. The book raises issues around friendship, family, self-harm and pro-life versus pro-choice topics. It does succeed in doing this without being too preachy or without taking 'sides' but the premise just seemed really silly to me. In order to gain financial security for her daughter's future, the mother - Charlotte - wants to sue her best friend for so-called 'wrongful birth'.
The story is delivered by at least five characters - mother, father, sister, doctor and lawyer - but there's no distinction between those voices. They all write in the same tone, I found myself repeatedly forgetting who was narrating because there was just no difference between them. And with 5 voices, you get an overly long book with a lot of repetition.
Those who love this kind of book will love this. Those who are not so keen may find it all a bit boring. And the ending turns out to be completely unnecessary.

Brittle bones

Handle With Care tells the story of 6 year old Willow who was born with osteogenesis imperfecta (also known as brittle bone disease). Her mother, Charlotte, struggling to finacially provide for her disabled daughter
discovers that she can sue for wrongful birth. Can she sue her obstetrician Piper, who is also her best friend? Can she fight against her husband Sean's wishes? And can she really tell her daughter that she wishes she had never been born?
In Jodi Picoult style the story is narrated from multiple viewpoints: Charlotte, Sean, elder daughter Amelia (who feels invisible in the family), Piper and lawyer Marin (with her own struggles from the past). Each chapter is narrated to Willow, except for the final chapter which is narrated by Willow herself. When I first read Willow's chapter I really wished it hadn't been included, however, afterwards the ending stayed with me and is very thought provoking when combined with events from the whole book and I can see why Picoult ended the story in this way.
Throughout the book, the chapters are interspersed with recipes from Charlotte, who was a chef, before looking after her daughter full time. The recipes were cleverly chosen to fit in with the choices of the characters in the book and how one ingredient or process can make something completely different, just like in life.
As with all Picoult books, the story is thoroughly researched, intelligently written and follows the courtroom drama build up that she has become famous for. Yes, her books are very similar in style but for me, it works. Handle With Care isn't up there with some of my favourite Picoult books like The Pact and Plain Truth , however I enjoyed it more than others I have read recently, including Songs of the Humpback Whale and Mercy

Children with disabilities

At times I found this book hard to read because when you have a child with a disability, it doesn't mean you love them any less but it can help to make people understand how difficult life can get.
My daughter has Autism and MLD and it is difficult to get some people to understand how they see the world and why they end up screaming a lot.
This is very well written as it shows that everybody In the family have struggled and you can loose friends because of disability. I know how Charlotte felt and wanted to know that her daughter would be safe and secure when she wasn't around in the future because that'd what you do when you have a child with a disability.

Another great read from one of my favourite authors. I always feel I learn a lot when reading anything by this author. I was nit interested in the recipes and that is why I dropped one star.

While some of Picoults books have a twist people don't agree with, this book will leave you feeling right about the ending and has a much more gentle story telling. There will always be questions left unanswered and things that might not make sense, but you'all be glad you gave your time to these characters and their viewpoints.
