(Hard Ink #3)
by Laura Kaye
ARC Review
Release: November 25, 2014

My rating: 4.5 of 5 ⭐️

I love this series. Love that each book has an individual story that is wrapped in the red thread that runs through the entire series. I can only imagine what Laura Kaye's story board looks like, in her attempts to keep the series' plot and its characters straight!!

Derek, or known to the Hard Ink fans as Marz, is still adjusting to the loss of a limb in an operation gone horribly wrong only two years ago. Around him, his compatriots are finding lasting connections, when he is still dealing with all he has lost. Not that it is easily visible to the outside world, after all, Derek is the one who tends to lighten the tension in the room. The one person he see revealing all of himself to, is one whom he has plenty of reason not to trust.

Emilie is an intuitive character, whose trust has been damaged. Not only by her ex, but also by her brother, whose struggle adjusting to civilian life after his active service, may have drawn him in to some shady circles. With a strong loyalty to her loved ones, but a growing unease regarding her brother, Emilie slowly starts realizing she needs to take action. The arrival of Derek on the scene has her needing to re-focus her priorities and trust her intuition.

The premise of this entire series falls within a limited time frame. As does this particular installment. Not normally a big fan of instant love, the tense circumstances make the quick emotional connections more plausible. Laura Kaye adds some serious heat to HARD TO COME BY, with highly eroticized scenes that have steam coming from the pages! Showing an intirely new and rather edgy side to Derek. One I liked...... A LOT!!

✨Love this series more with every book!!✨

4.75 stars--HARD TO COME BY is the third full length storyline in Laura Kaye’s adult, contemporary Hard Ink romantic suspense series focusing on a group of ex-special forces soldiers trying to prove their innocence in an Afghanistan mission that went horribly wrong. One year earlier, the five surviving members of the twelve man team returned home to discover they had been dishonorably discharged and their records falsified. This is Special Forces team member, IT specialist and amputee Derek (Marz) DiMarzio and psychologist Emilie Garza’s storyline -one that pits Emilie’s brother against the Hard Ink team.

Told from third person point of view, the storyline follows Derek as he is tasked with ‘getting to know’ Emilie better. Emilie’s brother Manny, an ex-Special Forces soldier, is a suspect in a number of suspicious murders and the soldiers of Hard Ink begin tracking his connections to their former commander-the commander who is believed to have turned on his men and left them to die.

The relationship between Derek and Emilie begins as a lie but soon develops into something more. Derek and Emilie are immediately attracted to one another but Derek knows the risk of destroying Emilie when the truth about their relationship is revealed.

The colorful secondary characters include all of the previous storyline couples as well as the remaining Special Forces soldiers and the local bike gang whose new mission is to help track the people responsible for the devastation that awaits the Team. The men of Hard Ink will acquire two new allies in their war at home but will lose someone close at the end of the day. Two more potential relationships have started to bloom.

The timeline from book one to book four is approximately two weeks to date.

HASH(0x9c9189a8) out of 5 stars Love Hard Ink Series Nov. 25 2014
By Pat Fordyce - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I have been a fan of the Hard Ink stories since the first, Hard As It Gets. The former spec ops guys with their injuries, memories, anger and the women who have come into their life and their stories. My favorite has been Hard as It Gets........until now. What is amazing to me, is the fact the whole series takes place as of this book, in two weeks time!

Decker DiMarzio is the computer genius/hacker of the group. He lost a leg in the debacle that caused the end of their career by falling on an IED to protect his brother in arms Bailey. Marz misses his leg, but is comfortable with the reason he lost it. Bailey is not so comfortable. The men are still hard at work to find any clue why their deceased commander Colonel Frank Merritt compromised their mission. Hacking into government sites, enlisting outside friends to help, even putting their lives in danger is all part of the mission. They have been trying to figure out how a local drug, gun running, human smuggler gang is involved. They have come up with a key name, Manny Garza, part of the Church Gang. He's a mystery, but they have discovered he has a sister in nearby Annapolis. Her name is Emilie, and she's a clinical psychologist. She's in their sites.

Emilie is deeply troubled by her brother Manny's behavior lately. He has PTSD and at times seems delusional. He appears at her home, occasionally violent and paranoid. She know's she has to act, but she remembers him as a totally different man before the army. While stopping in a cafe for coffee she meets a man who helps with a computer glitch on her laptop. He introduces himself as Derek and is in IT. They are mutually attracted and although Marz is feeling guilty lying to her he's all in.

Their is the usual action, banter and chest pounding, but with the women in the group now their is a softer side. Danger and death is a lot closer to home in this story and shocking news shakes these men to the core. Emilie never realized how strong she was until faced with deadly challenges and Marz is there to protect her. If you like heart pounding action and hot romance this is the series for you. I personally thinks it's best to start with Hard As It Gets.

I received this eBook from Edelweiss for an honest review.

HASH(0x9c918bf4) out of 5 stars Yet another 5 star read from Laura Kaye!! Nov. 25 2014
By The Geekery Book Review - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Since I read Hard As it Gets, I have been dying for Derek’s story. A book written about a hot, but physically flawed man had my full attention. Could it be written with the sexiness and heat that Laura Kaye is known for, but also come across as vulnerable and real?? Because seriously, most romances are written about hot, perfect looking specimens of male flesh that might have a cute, quirky character flaw, but ultimately they are something you would see sculpted in marble in the finest museums in the world. Now, the other books in the Hard Ink series have dealt with scars, both physical and mental, but I can’t remember ever reading a romance about a man that’s an amputee. Needless to say, this intrigued me.

Well, let me say one thing….

She pulled it off!!!! Completely, honestly, vulnerably, and most of all sexily. Derek is so, so sweet, and funny, and down to earth, and then on a flip of the coin he is smoking hot, domineering, with a dirty mouth that just makes you swoon. He is everything you would put on a checklist for the perfect man. And you know what?? His leg adds a complete other layer to him that makes him, in my book, the man of the year. I know I should focus on both characters, and Emilie is kicka** awesome, but Derek totally stole the show for me.

If you have read the other Hard Ink books, it’s a guarantee that you’ll love Hard To Come By even more. The normal Hard Ink camaraderie between all the men is there, and to me, that’s one of the main reason I love this series. There’s one line in the book that’s my favorite, because it totally sums up this series. It’s:… “ She felt a little ridiculous as she walked into the upscale grocery store, a team of muscled badasses following her.”… And that is the hotness known as The Men of Hard Ink. They protect what they love, they fight for what they believe in, and they make us wish they were ours!!

This is yet another 5 star read from Laura Kaye!!

HASH(0x9c918e34) out of 5 stars Derek DiMarzio will steal your breath .... and your heart Nov. 25 2014
By Crystal♥ @RBtWBC - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Okay, first, I just have to say. How much does the model on the cover look like Piper from Charmed? Awesome! And the male model ain't too bad himself. *wink* From the previous books in the series, I didn't think that I could fall in love with Marz any more. But after reading Hard To Come By, Laura Kaye proved me wrong once again!

Derek DiMarzio lost his leg, his friends, and his military career because of a horrific betrayal. But him and his surviving team members are back together and looking for answers. Their investigation finally leads them to another ex-military man and current mercenary, but the only way to get to him is through his sister. When Derek see's Emilie Garza he immediately volunteers for the job to get closer to her. Not knowing that in doing so, he'd loose his heart as well.
To psychologist, Emilie Garza, family is everything. And after her failed marriage, so is trust. When she meets Derek on a lunch break she is captivated by the attractive and charming IT tech and can't say no to him when he asks her out. Little did she know that her peaceful work would soon be turned upside down. Danger surrounds them as the truth about her brother's mysterious behavior is revealed. But when Derek's true identity is also divulged, not only is Emilie's trust broken, but so is her heart. Can either be mended or will Derek's and her brother's enemies steal any chance of redemption away?

I'm hooked on Laura Kaye's hot, edgy, swoon-worthily alpha Hard Ink men!
Derek DiMarzio will steal your breath .... and your heart. This man has been through so much in his life. A childhood without love, a betrayal from the only father-figure he had, the loss of his leg and then proving that he is just as capable as he was before despite it. He is a true hero. Caring, charming, and always quick with a joke to lighten the mood - there is nothing about his character to dislike and everything to love! And Emilie is everything that Derek deserves. Together, these two were absolutely perfect. That's not to say that their relationship didn't have it's bumps, because it did and they were agonizing. But the chemistry and connection that they shared was out of this world. If I had to describe Emilie in one word it would be - Real. She is upfront with her feelings, easy going, protective, and intelligent. I really admired both of these characters.

The rest of the Hard Ink men and women play roles throughout the story and there is not a single one that I don't adore. I am simply on pins and needles for Jeremy's story! The world building and writing was impeccable, which is not surprising coming from this author. (There is a reason I've read every one of her books.) I could easily imagine myself right along side the characters at any given moment.

This book had it all; steamy passion, thrilling action, compelling characters, and heart-warming humor. Laura Kaye is a master at weaving deep emotions with edge-of-your-seat suspense for an absolute page-turner. Hard To Come By is one of my favorite reads of the year and one that you should pick up today!

HASH(0x9c9190cc) out of 5 stars Pleasing for Fans But It's Not Her Best March 7 2015
By Rachel - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I fell in love with the Hard Ink men from the moment I first picked up Hard as It Gets so I really wish I could have given it a higher rating than this. Marz is a fun-loving and charismatic guy and I had a lot of admiration for his positivity in the face of everything life's thrown at him. Emilie was likeable enough and had a good heart, even if she wasn't the brightest crayon in the box.

The problems?

I know this is erotica and some readers will love Marz's dirty bedroom talk but personally, the crassness and explicit detail cheapened the story for me. When I pick up a book, the last thing I want to find is B grade porn.

I also worry that Laura Kaye might be showing herself to be a one-trick pony when it comes to storytelling. Kidnapping? Check. Unnecessarily complicated romance? Check. It's the same formula she's been following for the whole series up until this point.

Admittedly, there's a spanner thrown into the works with a twist at the end so I am excited to see what's going to happen with the crew next. There's still hope!

HASH(0x9c9193c0) out of 5 stars A decent read. March 2 2015

Derek DiMarzio has never known what it’s like to be loved, being abandoned and growing up in the foster care system. His only family is the one he created in the army. The very brothers that are fighting beside him to clear their names and restore their honor.

Derek lost his leg during the ambush in Afghanistan that changed their lives, saving his best friend, Beckett. Ever since things have been different as Beckett is racked with guilt at what Derek lost in order to save him.

The team is hunting down Manny Garza in hopes of discovering some new information to help in their quest. But there are no traces of the man anywhere, even online, which is quite unusual. But they discover Manny’s sister, Emilie. Derek decides to get closer to her to help find her brother, but he never expected the instant attraction he has to her!

This was a decent read in the Hard Ink series. I really enjoyed Derek. He was a pretty happy guy considering all the adversaries he has faced in his life, and was always ready to crack a joke to raise spirits of those around him. Which is amazing considering the loss of his leg.

Emilie was a strong female lead as well. She is self-sufficient and does what she knows is right, even if it’s not a popular opinion, especially where her brother is concerned.

This was a fun couple to get to know. I loved how accepting Emilie was of Derek’s prosthesis, even though I have trouble believing many people in real life would be as open to it, even finding it sexy, as she did. And, speaking of sexy … this couple really burns up the sheets and sweet Derek shows his dirty (talking) side!

My main complaint in this book is that toward the end of the story, I felt the book really started to drag and lose my interest. But stick with it as an important revelation is revealed in the final pages.
