Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Ex-army MP Jack Reacher is contracted by Edward Lane, the leader of a mercenary company, to track and recover Lane's kidnapped wife and daughter. But while Reacher is adept at finding people, this time he's got his work cut out for him, for in this case, the client seems to be just as suspect as the criminal. Hill narrates with a crisp, midrange baritone which effectively, if not spectacularly, conveys Child's prose. For the most part, Hill speaks naturally and clearly, but at times, he seems to exaggerate his enunciation, which results in some stilted passages. He doesn't alter his style much when shifting between dialogue and description, and so conversations are sometimes not as engaging as they could be. While Child's prose reads fine on the page, Hill's interpretation of it seems a bit too smug, which makes even the hero a bit unlikable. Hill's adequate performance will likely be sufficient for the casual audiobook listener but not for connoisseurs.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Child's last two Jack Reacher novels (One Shot, 2005, and The Enemy, 2004) have emphasized procedural detail rather than the high-octane action that gave the series its identity. There's still plenty of procedure, but this time the gearshift is back in overdrive: "Reacher, alone in the dark. Armed and dangerous. Coming back." Former military cop Reacher does his level best not to come back: he lives off the grid (no address, no belongings), but his instincts keep driving him toward solving other people's problems, the kind that won't stay solved without violence. Here, he's having an espresso in Greenwich Village when a man walks across the street, gets in a car, and drives away. It happens every day, but it's not always a kidnapper picking up the ransom. Soon Reacher is involved in helping a ruthless mercenary find his wife and stepdaughter before the kidnappers tie up loose ends. There's a lot more to it than that, though, and it takes three-fourths of the novel before Reacher figures out who the bad guys are. Like all the best thrillers, this one is about more than pace: yes, the narrative propels you forward with a locomotive's thrust, but Child never loses sight of the small detail or the human fabric--not unlike Reacher in the dark, armed and dangerous, intent on the action in front of him but always aware of the sights and sounds to his sides and behind him. I've read all of his novels & anxiously awaiting his next one The whole Jack Reacher series is great, I'd recommend them all. The only problem is the movie. Jack Reacher is 6' 5" 230 lbs. Tom Cruise is 5' & maybe 150 lbs, Jack Reacher should be Dwayne Johnson instead,

‘The Hard Way’, the tenth of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, perhaps would have created a better impression with me had I not read it immediately after the exceptional ‘One Shot’. I found the tale lacking from the very start. Reacher getting roped in to a kidnapping ransom payoff just for sitting at a table in a roadside coffee shop. That was weak. He had no real motivation to involve himself in the story and unfortunately what transpires after this was also very wishy-washy. Yes, I did work out both the ‘big reveals’ easily within the first third of the book.
Overall impression: the author just wasn’t trying hard enough with this one. It had so much potential, ignored for the most part in favour of a vehicle for his character to do a little international travelling, in this case back to Lee Child’s UK home. (Lee Child is British writer Jim Grant, in case you did not know).
Yes, I had the impression this one had been written on the plane ride back to Blighty.

Jack Reacher, book 10

Jack Reacher known as the best man-hunter in the world ends up helping Edward Lane, a well-paid mercenary, whose wife and stepdaughter have been kidnapped. Initially Reacher volunteers to help, as the case develops, things prove not to be what they seem. Alarm bells ring when he discovers Lane's previous wife was kidnapped and also during a mission two members of his crew were left behind in a foreign country...what is Lane hiding, what type of character is he?, can he be trusted? Reacher is determined to find the truth, come hell or high water....

This gripping novel captures your attention immediately with a well paced and easy plot; containing a fair share of suspense, action, surprises and romance. The prose is clear and concise all through, no place for ambiguity. The leading character is well drawn; Jack Reacher is a maverick, kind of 21st century cowboy, good hearted globe trotter having another absorbing adventure involving many equally interesting secondary characters.

I started at this point in the series and I feel the story stood on its own and not based on any previous characters and episodes as in some other series. This thriller gives you a definite adrenaline rush, captivating till the end.

Well I've read ten of Lee Child's Reacher books and have enjoyed every one. I let myself be taken away into Reacher's impossible worlds and just enjoy the ride.

This is an epic Reacher novel. Great suspense, well written story line and the usual violence meted out to the villains. Super read.
